Hi,
The fragment at the top looks to be part of a grenade. It would have been about 3" round, filled with an explosive substance similar to gun powder and plugged with a hand carved wooden plug. The plug would have had a hole drilled down the center for a fuse and this would have been lit by a soldier appropriately called a grenadier.
