- This is one of seven oil on canvas paintings by Birch that depicts the Battle of Lake Erie (September 1813).
This particular canvas shows Commodore Perry's flagship, the Lawrence, opposing the Detriot, the flagship of Commander Barclay, at the commencement of the battle. Nearby are the Caledonia opposing the Hunter, and the Niagara opposing the Queen Charlotte. All ships are firing full broadsides.
