SUTHERLAND, Evelyn - At Caressant Care, Woodstock on Sunday, March 13, 2011, Evelyn Alvina Sutherland of Woodstock in her 104th year. Beloved wife of the late James C. Sutherland (1961). Mother of the late William "Bill" Sutherland (1995) and mother-in-law of Mary Knott Sutherland of Woodstock. Survived by three granddaughters, Judith Ann Park (John), Linda Makarewicz (Joe) and Rosemary Sears, all of Woodstock. Great grandmother of Jamie Adams (Tasha), Charlie Gibbons, Tracy Gibbons, Brenda Brodhagen and Daniel Brodhagen (Des). Great great grandmother of Billy, Emily, Alexandria and Jackson. Sister of the late Lillian Willmore, Mabel Fraser, Virne E. Johnston and Velma Capling. Survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Evelyn Sutherland was President of J. and J. Sutherland Limited following the death of her husband in 1961, and worked at the store with her son William Sutherland until the business was sold in 1985. She was active in volunteer service work for the community. During the Second World War, she did service work for the Red Cross. She also did some work for the United Appeal when it was first formed in Woodstock as well as volunteered with the Victorian Order of Nurses. Evelyn was a member of the Auxiliary to Woodstock General Hospital for well over fifty years. In 1939 she joined the I.O.D.E. Admiral Vansittart Chapter, and in 1962 she joined the Zonta Club of Woodstock and was a member for 49 years. In 1970 she served on the board of directors of the YMCA. Evelyn was also a long time member of the Tuesday Reading Club (since 1950). Always interested in sports, she played at the old Oxford Golf and Country Club (since the 1930's) when they operated the original course off Mill Street in Woodstock, and continued when they moved to the new eighteen-hole course now known as Craigowan. She was president of the Women's Section for the Woodstock Curling Club in 1956-57. Friends will be received at the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME , 69 Wellington Street North, Woodstock on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm for a funeral service in the chapel at 1:00 pm with Rev. Mark McLennan officiating. Spring interment at the Presbyterian Cemetery.
