BLACK, Michael - Suddenly, after a short illness, our dear Michael David William Black (Mike to many) passed away surrounded by family and friends on June 6, 2013. Michael is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Barbara, his children Darren, Ryan (Lisa), Ashly (Ian) and his two precious grandsons Aaron and Nathan Black. Also survived by his sister Barbara (Bruce), his brother Stephen (Jenny), his brother-in-law Robert Coté and many nieces and nephews, cousins and an uncle. He was predeceased by his parents Clarence and Annette Black and his sister Patricia Coté. Born on July 22, 1947 in North Bay, ON, Michael spent his formative years in Timmins, ON until he joined the R.C.M.P. on March 3, 1967, training in Regina SK and Penhold AB. He was stationed in Thompson MB, Dauphin MB, Thunder Bay ON, Sudbury ON, North Bay ON and Woodstock where he and Barb settled and lived for over 19 years. Michael loved golf, cycling, basketball, baseball, and hockey and coached young people for years. He was always involved in volunteer work and community issues with a special fondness for veterans and the elderly; he had a lot of 80-year-old "girlfriends" at Woodingford Lodge and Caressant Care. He was a very spiritual man who lived Christ's message - "Preach the gospel, and if necessary, use words." Michael was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and involved with Operation Sharing and Mission work as the "can man", collecting cans for Missions here and abroad. He had a love for life, a great sense of humour, a beautiful, friendly and welcoming personality. He was a great husband, father and grandfather and will surely be missed. The adventure continues Michael. We love you, God loves you, rest in the arms of God, good and faithful servant. Friends will be received at the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, 69 Wellington Street North, Woodstock on Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Parish prayers on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. A Royal Canadian Legion service will be held at 6:30 p.m. under the auspices of Branch 55. Funeral Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1420 Devonshire Avenue, Woodstock on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. If desired, memorial donations to the Holy Trinity Building Fund, London Regional Cancer Program or Operation Sharing would be appreciated. Smith-LeRoy, (519) 537-3611. Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy.com
