January 11, 1933 -- August 23, 2022
A devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, teacher and small business owner, Arthur Apps passed away peacefully in hospital on August 23, 2022. In his 90th year, he was healthy, active and fully independent until his final weeks of life.
Arthur was born in 1933, the youngest child of the late Charlotte Luard Lloyd-Jones Apps and Alfred Stanley Apps. Raised in the depression by a single mother, he spent his youth in Brant County, working with McKerlie Automotive in Brantford, where he pursued his passion for cars, honed his life-defining skills and met a nursing student from Curries, Ontario, Margaret Imogene (nee Gracey), who he married in 1955.
In 1963, upon completing his teaching certification at OISE, Arthur and Imogene moved to Woodstock, Ontario with their young family, where he began a 25-year high-school teaching career. Together they made a welcoming home and raised a large family. He also started an engine-rebuilding business which he successfully operated for over 35 years. In 2014, at age 81, he sold the business and retired to Kingston, Ontario.
Predeceased by his devoted wife, Imogene (2005), and their daughter, Mary Kathleen (1965), he will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his 6 surviving children and their partners; Alfred, Peg (and Fred), Eric (and Laura), Caroline (and David), David (and Patrizia) and Martin. He was a loving grandpa to 16 grandchildren who will all miss his kindness, curiosity, sense of humour and unique vocabulary: Devon, Suzanne, Nicole, Catherine, Hannah, Carlyle, Caroline, Robert, Grace, Nathalie, Charlotte, Olivia, Aubrey-Rose, Xavier, Dante and Thais. He was also a great grandpa to 3 great grand-children, Owen, Aren and Bridget
Also predeceased by his brothers William (1957) and David (2014), Arthur is survived by his older sister, Frances, and a large extended family of Gracey in-laws, nieces and nephews .
Arthur was most importantly a modest man, with an encyclopedic range of knowledge, an incredible memory for names and details, and a genuine interest in the people around him and what he might learn from them. He was a huge fan of coffee-shop chats with complete strangers, never hesitating to initiate conversations and invariably finding connections with them.
We extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the wonderful team at Kingston General Hospital and to his personal doctor, Dr. Tara MacGregor of Kingston, for the exceptional care they provided during his final weeks of life and the attention they paid to him. As one of his nurses shared with us "your father is a lovely man". He was indeed.
A memorial service to celebrate Arthur's life will be held at Old St. Paul's Anglican Church, Woodstock, Ontario on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 2 p.m., followed by a private family interment ceremony.
For those wishing to do so, charitable donations may be made in Arthur's memory to help maintain the historic beauty of Old St. Paul's Church at this link:
