Passed peacefully and painlessly on the morning of August 14, 2024 at Woodingford Lodge, Ingersoll at the age of 92.

The beloved husband of 47 years to Donamay (Rogers). Devoted father to Brian, Linda and Barry. Loving Grandfather and Papa of Alexa, Delaney, Gracon, Adam and Ryan. Predeceased by his wife Donamay, father Aaron, mother Beatrice, brothers Mervin, Murray and Floyd, sisters Eileen and Rae and daughter-in-law Donna.

A hard-working, adventurous farm boy from the self proclaimed "one horse town" of Melfort, Saskatchewan, he led a full and remarkable life. He left the farm for work in Vancouver B.C. before searching for opportunity in Ontario. He decided on Woodstock and was employed from the day he arrived. He took a job changing oil at a local car dealership, was hired as a police officer for the Woodstock Police Service, and then his final lifelong calling with the Woodstock Fire Department in 1956. He was married the same year and retired in 1987 as the Deputy Fire Chief and moved to Prince George B.C. in 1995 before returning to Woodstock again in 2006 to be a full-time Papa.

An athletic man who enjoyed playing golf, baseball, bowling, curling and his running joke about playing in the NHL (Norwich Hockey League). While working and raising a young family he built a cottage in Stokes Bay and enjoyed fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. An avid gardener, he could be found happily weeding and tending to the neat rows of fruits and vegetables, or fixing quite literally anything that was broken.

A kind, sweet, gentle soul admired and respected by all those fortunate enough to know him. His sense of humour, his smile and his generous heart will be sadly missed and remembered by family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Navy Club in Woodstock on Sunday, September 22, 2024 from 1p.m. to 5p.m.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations to be made to the Canadian Lung Association. Personal condolences may be shared at www.smithleroy.com.
