It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden, yet peaceful passing of James William Watling, more affectionately known to those around him, as Jim. Surrounded by his family, at Sakura House on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at the age of 72.
Loving and devoted husband for 47 years to Dianne Watling (nee Ataman). Cherished father of Sandy (Kelly) Zinger, and dear grandfather to Evan Zinger. Survived by his sisters, Carla Newton (Jim Cox), and Sheri (Terry) Hainer, and brother-in-law Jack (Barb) Ataman. Predeceased by his mother Dorothy Watling (nee Harris), and brother-in-law Jerry (Barbara) Ataman. Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews, Jason (Sarah), Kristopher, Brittany (Andrew), Laura (Jeff), David (Sandra), and Lisa (Joe).
Jim was a cherished member of our community. Born and raised in Woodstock, Ontario, Jim was a man of remarkable character whose life was defined by his dedication to both his profession and his community.
Jim began his distinguished 40-year career at Rudy's Meat Market, where he earned a reputation for his exceptional work ethic and unwavering commitment to quality. Following his tenure there, he continued to help out at various meat markets, as well as tending to lawn care for many people's homes. He further served his community with fervor at Smith-LeRoy Funeral Home. His efforts were instrumental in the home receiving several City Beautiful Awards, a testament to his attention to detail, dedication, and professionalism.
A proud 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Jim served as Grand Knight for two years, contributing significantly to the organization and its mission. His community involvement extended far beyond his formal roles; he had a gift for connecting with people, always remembering their names and making them feel valued.
Jim was known for his silent strength, which he maintained even during his illness. His relentless spirit and resilience were evident in every aspect of his life. An avid walker, he completed 25 kilometers each week, a testament to his love for an active lifestyle and his enduring vitality.
Jim's kindness, honesty, and hard-working nature were the hallmarks of his character. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and dedication that touched the lives of many.
The family would like thank the countless friends and neighbors that continued to show their love and support in the final weeks of Jim's life.
Jim's presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Guests will be received at the Smith-LeRoy Funeral Home, 69 Wellington St. N, Woodstock, on Friday, September 13, 2024, between 4 – 7 p.m. Mass of Chrisitan Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1420 Devonshire Ave, Woodstock. Following the service, everyone is welcome to the Parish Hall for a reception and time of continued fellowship.
