Gertrude (Gertie) Evelyn Fewster

February 19, 1929 - October 1, 2024

She loved well and was well loved.

Gertie passed peacefully and comfortably at People Care Tavistock and back into the loving arms of the special men in her life who passed before her - her husband Carl, her son Ron and her very special friends Spike Logan and Bob Wardell.

She was part of a large family and was the last surviving member of the George and Evelyn Herman family that included Victor, Bernice, Howard, Mildred, Wilma, Leland, Bob, Phil, David, Wayne and Phyllis.

She is fondly remembered and missed by her sons Alan and Gary of Woodstock, her daughters in law Cathy Fewster, Marlene Fewster and Susan Fewster also of Woodstock.

Having no daughters of her own Gertie was pleased to welcome four granddaughters into her life - Jessica (Chris) Pepper, Sarah (Jeff) Heinbuck, Tiffany (Justin) Salt and Amanda Fewster. She was possibly even more pleased when her great grandchildren arrived - Calan and Adelle Pepper, Olivia and Jacob Heinbuck and Scotlynn, McKinley, and Miller Salt.

Gertie lived the majority of her life on the Fewster farm not far from the small village of Zenda. She was entrepreneurial, raised chickens and established an egg business and route that was in high demand with many of her customers in her home town of Tillsonburg. Although busy with her family and domestic responsibilities she found time to work in tobacco harvest. She was renowned for her cooking and baking. Her family will attest that there was never a tough piece of roast or lumpy potatoes served. Her apple pies were unequalled. Needless to say there was no arm twisting to get the family to attend "Sunday suppers". She was adept at crocheting, sewing and knitting and left behind a legacy of quilts, "baby" blankets and afghans. Her competitive nature could be found at the card table where she was an avid and accomplished euchre player. She showed no mercy when playing UNO with the grandchildren and was known to break the rules to her advantage.

Following the move from the farm back to Tillsonburg she found employment, friendship and joy working at the Gift Shoppe on Broadway. She always dressed to impress and was never seen in public without her hair fashioned, her nails painted and her makeup applied. Although family was the focus of her life she enjoyed a good shopping trip and rarely returned home without a few articles of clothing and jewellery.

She was instilled with grit, determination and resilience which earned her the loving nickname, "The Energizer Bunny"as she survived COVID, dementia, cancer and other significant medical issues. She was one of the few to be discharged from Sakura House!

Although her final years were a challenge they were greatly enhanced by the care and concern that she received from her neighbors and community supports. Special thanks is extended to Dr. John Andrew, her family doctor for many years. She received excellent care while living at Langdon Retirement Villa in Woodstock and People Care in Tavistock.

We were not as sad to see you go as we would have been to have never had you in our lives.

A private family service was held at the graveside in Mount Elgin

Memorial donations to Sakura House Hospice would be welcomed.
