Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Woodstock General Hospital on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the age of 84.

Beloved husband of Sylvia Smith (née Jackson), with whom he shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Loving father to Andrew (Meredith) Smith, Jennifer (Chris) Armatage, Matthew (Shannon) Smith, and Tim Smith. Cherished grandfather of Joshua (Emily), Becca (Joe), Ryley, Payton, Johnathan, Natalie, and Jayne, and proud great-grandfather to Everette. Fondly remembered by his niece Michelle and nephew Richard. Predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Phyllis Smith, and his sister, Helen.

Dave was born in London, Ontario, in 1940 to Phyllis and Joe Smith, both visually impaired. Growing up with his sister Helen, Dave was deeply shaped by his close-knit family. After his father's passing when Dave was 16, he took on responsibilities well beyond his years, balancing work and school to support his family and graduating from Beal Secondary School.

In 1960, Dave began his career with the London Police Force, where he developed many lifelong friendships. Two years later, he married Sylvia, the love of his life, who was then studying to become a nurse. Together, they built a life filled with love, raising four children and dedicating themselves to their community through coaching, Scouts leadership, and volunteer work.

Dave transitioned from the London Police Force to a role with General Motors in Woodstock, Ontario, in 1975. After moving to Sylvia's hometown the following year, Dave excelled in his career, advancing to floor supervisor and contributing significantly to GM's Canadian Supervisors Council. He retired after more than 25 successful years, leaving a lasting impact on his workplace and community.

In retirement, Dave and Sylvia embraced their love for travel, exploring destinations including Canada, England, Cuba, Aruba, and Alaska, creating countless memories on their adventures. Dave also found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially time with his family and the companionship of dogs, whom he adored.

Throughout the past two decades, Dave faced health challenges with remarkable courage and resilience, never allowing them to overshadow his love for life. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Palma, Dr. Welk, Dr. Quinlan, Dr. Berberich, Dr. Dubois, and the compassionate team at Woodstock General Hospital for their dedicated care.

Dave's greatest joy was his family, and his love for Sylvia was unwavering. Though his passing leaves an irreplaceable void, his memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

Guests will be received at Saint David's United Church, 190 Springbank Ave., Woodstock, on Monday, December 16, from 12:00 to 12:45 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. A reception will take place afterward.

Donations in Dave's memory may be made to the Woodstock General Hospital Foundation or Saint David's United Church. Personal condolences may be shared at www.smithleroy.com
