February 2, 1916 - January 24, 2008 - HAMER, Leah (née Stewart) - The family and friends of Leah Hamer are saddened to announce that Leah passed away on Thursday, January 24, at Woodstock General Hospital, less than two weeks away from her 92nd birthday. Leah lived a full and remarkable life. She was born near Parry Sound, Ontario, the youngest of eight children. In her early years, she worked as a governess for a number of families. During the war, her career with the R.C.A.F. took her to western Canada, where she met and married Douglas Hamer. They settled in Woodstock in 1963 and purchased Wray's Snack Bar, which they operated until 1983. Leah maintained a great curiosity about the world, and in retirement, travelled to many different countries and continents. Leah was predeceased by her beloved husband Douglas. She will be greatly missed by her nephew Jim Hopkings, Virginia Hopkings and family, nephew Bruce Hamer, Susan Fussell and family as well as many other nieces and nephews and countless friends in the Woodstock community and beyond. Her loss will also be felt by her colleagues at Woodingford Lodge and Hospice, where she volunteered, and her fellow clowns of Comic Relief will especially miss the joyful contributions of “Candy Floss”. Leah lives on in our hearts and minds, her wisdom and loving kindness an inspiration to everyone who knew her. We will never forget her giving nature, her love of life and her humour in a lifetime of caring for others. Friends of Leah are invited to a memorial service in celebration of her life on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Huron Park Baptist Church, 199 Berwick St., Woodstock.
