Mitchell, Eleanor Eunice (nee Landriault) - The family announces with deep sorrow her passing at the age of 62 on September 12, 2009 at Sudbury Regional Hospital, surrounded and cared for by her family and friends after a long and brave battle against breast cancer. Ellie Mitchell, devoted wife of Gord Mitchell Jr. Loving mother to Elizabeth Chirico of North Bay and Steven Perrott of Sudbury. Deeply missed by her son-in-law Robert Chirico and daughter-in-law Monica MacMillan. Forever remembered by her grandchildren Charlie, Caleigh, Cooper, Rowan and Lucas. Predeceased by her parents Helen and Aurel Landriault. Dear daughter-in-law to Ellen Mitchell (late Gord Mitchell Sr.) of Port Burwell. Step mother to Jody Mitchell (Tracy) and predeceased by step-son Christopher Mitchell (Anne) all of Woodstock. Lovingly remembered by her cousin Anne-Marie Larochelle of Massey, and lifelong friends Karen Pedersen and Jean Sullivan of North Bay. Ellie and Gord began running Island Lake Camp in 1976 and spent many years upgrading the camp and building a devoted customer base to make it one of the finest tourist camps in Northern Ontario. Ellie was awarded the prestigious Bob Giles Award in 2004 from the Ministry of Natural Resources for her work promoting and working in Northern Ontario Tourism. Ellie was a dedicated member of the Ontario Fish and Wildlife Heritage Commission since its inception in 2004, the Ontario Moose-Bear Allocation Advisory Commission for 16 years and the provincial initiative called Hunting Heritage/Hunting Futures. Recently Ellie was pleased to receive a certificate from The Minister of Tourism, Monique Smith recognizing her outstanding contribution and commitment to tourism in Northern Ontario. A letter of acknowledgment has also been received from the Premier of Ontario honouring Ellie for her devoted service to the tourism industry for more than 30 years. Ellie will remain greatly respected and missed by all her friends, associates and fellow outfitters.
Ellie was a career member of the international women's social, cultural and service organization Beta Sigma Phi and will be greatly missed by all her sorority sisters in North Bay. Ellie will also be missed by her friends “Sisters by Choice” of Marten River, Rose Riley and the dedicated staff at camp. Our family would like to offer our deep appreciation and gratitude to the staff at the NEO Cancer Clinic and the 4rth floor at the Sudbury Regional Hospital. A service celebrating Ellie's life will be held at Island Lake Camp on Sunday, September 20 at 1 pm. Please call 1-888-809-9993 for more information. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ellie's name to the North Eastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre in Sudbury would be gratefully appreciated by our family.
