The present work is an outgrowth of research for a previous volume, Stones, Saints and Sinners, by the same authors, about the cemeteries of Niagara on the Lake. That research coupled with the sorting through of documents found in St.Mark's Archives inspired further investigation This book has involved the work of many people. Fred Habermehl did the initial writing. In collaboration with Donald Combe many additions and deletions were made as information was gathered. Betty Magnacca and Ann Lindsay encouraged the concept, supported the project over several years, read the first drafts and made many recommendations. The manuscript was edited by Nancy Butler, historian, author and past president of the Niagara Historical Society. Her involvement has been invaluable. She paid close attention to details, and proposed changes that have made the text more readable. We are indebted to Joy Ormsby, official historian of Niagara on the Lake, the Right Reverend D. Ralph Spence, Bishop of Niagara, the Honourable Robert Welch, Chancellor Emeritus of the Diocese of Niagara, and the Rev. Dr. Robert Wright, Rector of the Parish for their reading of the manuscript and the suggestions that they offered. Frank Wieler undertook the time consuming task of formatting the text. His computer skills and his willingness to give the time required to enhance the quality of the pictures and to design the layout and cover made this publication possible. The generosity of many librarians made our work easier, but Dorothy Kealey, archivist for the Anglican Church of Canada, went out of her way to direct us to relevant materials that we might never have discovered. James Sweeny, Quebec Diocesan Archivist at Bishop's University provided information from early records of the Bishops of Quebec. The transcriptions of the headstones in St. Mark's cemetery published by the Niagara branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society were invaluable. We also thank Bill Severin of the Niagara Historical Museum for assistance in locating information concerning the early years of St. Mark's Church. Sandra Woodruff, Blanche Quinn and Helen Steele were among those who made their collections available to us. Keith Dancy, Alan Magnacca, Bill Lindsay and Gary Burroughs were responsible for planning the financing and marketing of the publication. It is through the encouragement and support of the Rector, members of the Corporation and residents of Niagara on the Lake that this book is now presented to the reader.
