- Queenston Association gets Charter
Presenting the Provincial charter to the Queenston Community Association last Saturday at the opening of the Queenston Library, Basil W. Clark complimented the residents of Queenston on their effort and drew attention to the number of friends which the community has made through the effort. Mr. Clark said when Dr. Afrukhteh first approached him on the idea of providing Queenston with a library he had no notion it would have led to such a fascinating series of events. He felt the library and community centre will serve a most useful purpose and that many generations may make use of the facilities which the Community Association plans to provide.
Debt to Jack Niven
Jack Niven, Vice President, Works, Queenston Community Association, was paid high tribute during opening ceremonies of the Queenston Library for the role he played in restoring the old Baptist church into a modern functional structure. Mr. Niven spearheaded a crew of workers who toiled day and night in their efforts to have the Queenston Library ready for opening by Hon. Robert Welch last Saturday. President Aubrey Dickson said Jack was the driving force behind the rehabilitation of the building and Queenston residents owed him a great debt.
Donor thanked in Arabic
John Kormos, Secretary of the Queenston Community Association's executive building and restoration committee displayed a very thoughtful gesture when he attempted to express his organization's appreciation and thanks to Dr. Djamal Afrukhteh, Niagara Falls physician who donated the property for the Library. Mr. Kormos ended his speech with a short quotation in Arabic, the donor's native language. Mr. Kormos received loud applause at the end of his speech for having so thoughtfully included Dr. Afrukhteh's mother tongue.
Ontario Foundation praised
Glowing comment was made last Saturday on the active interest shown by the Ontario Heritage Foundation in assisting and guiding the Queenston Community Association during the period of restoring the 130 year old Baptist Church into a Library and Community Centre Aubrey Dickson, President of the Association, Hon. Robert Welch, Dr. D. Afrukhteh and Basil W. Clark, all commented favourably on the contribution the Foundation made to the success of the project, culminating in its official opening on Saturday afternoon. Through the kind offices of the Foundation the first preliminary survey of the feasibility of the idea was conducted by H.G. Acres of Niagara Falls - Media Type
