Hamilton Convention Area History The twenty-fifth convention of the Hamilton Area is scheduled for October 30th and 31st, 1951, in the Royal Connaught Hotel. Special arrangements for the occasion are under way and the guest speaker for the banquet, John Fisher, C.B.C. Commentator. To commemorate the occasion, the story of the organization meeting of the Convention area, and of the first convention, together with a resume of subsequent events is recorded as follows: Previous to 1927, this Convention area was part of the Central Ontario (Toronto) area. The attendance at the Toronto conventions was fast increasing and becoming rather unwieldy, consequently our wise and far-seeing Superintendent, Mr. Putnam, conceived the idea of organizing a Convention area in the Hamilton district. On May 14th, 1927, the presidents, vice-presidents and secretaries of the districts of sub-division No. 9 met at the call of the Superintendent, in the office of the Agricultural Representative, Mr. Marritt, 16 Market Street, Hamilton. It was decided to organize a Convention area, composed of the districts of Lincoln, Welland, Haldimand, North and South Wentworth -- to be called "The Niagara Peninsula Convention Area". The officers chosen were: Chairman, Mrs. Inch, Hamilton: Secretary, Mrs. J. A. MacLennan, Dundas; Treasurer, Mrs. Horace Smith, Hamilton. A sub-committee of five, one from each district was named: Mesdames Aiken, Taylor, George, Berry and Walker. It was decided that the Convenors of standing committees be chosen by the districts at their District Annuals and they were allocated as follows: Lincoln, Education, Community Activities; Welland, Relief, Home Economics; South Wentworth, Canadian Industries, Historical Research; North Wentworth, Agriculture, Immigration; Haldimand, Health, Publicity and Education. ' The Resolutions Committee was to consist of five members, one from each district. The Convention was to be held November 3 and 4, two sessions each day. The cost of transportation of one member from each district, to the general committee meeting, was to be paid out of convention funds, when the amount exceeded one dollar.
