Woodland Cemetery

I'm writing in regard to the Woodland Cemetery which is adjacent to the Woodland Springs United Church in Egremont Township. A burial has been missed in the records I've seen.

When I visited the cemetery in 1991 the memorial for Janet (Jessie) and James Murdoch was easy to find. At that time I noticed a small piece of white stone almost completely covered with grass to the left of the Murdoch memorial. After returning from the car with a pocket knife I cut grass away and revealed a small headstone which had apparently been missed by those making records of the cemetery. It had broken in half, was laid flat, and was now overgrown. This small headstone is for James and Janet's fourth child, Andrew. The information and inscription are well aged and difficult to read.

Although I have not seen the Murdoch Family Bible, a letter was written June 19, 1961, by Wallace Murdoch, the Bible's owner at that time. From this Bible, Wallace copied all the handwritten information for children's birth dates, marriages, and deaths.

This "missing" headstone is for Andrew who was born October 15th, 1861. While the family Bible says he died at age 5 years, the headstone says, "AGED 4 YRS. 9MS." The Bible does not note the date. Because my photograph was taken in poor light, this date from the stone should be corroborated: July 25, 1966.

Another child was born in 1867 and was also named Andrew.
