THE ENGLISH HORSES AND THEIR OWNERS. ommz The Earl of DerBy 1 who is renowned not o-l{.‘u a statesman and scholar of rare ability, also as an enâ€" thusiastic lover of sport, bas a magnificent stable for his numerous stud at Knowsley, uear Liverpool. Although Earl Derby has won the proud badge of English cbhivairyâ€"the blue til b )n of the Garter, he has never, we believe, "Derby winner." The stable at Knowsley consists of a quadrangle about 200 feet equare, including a paved court.© In the centre there is :g:vered circle for exercising horses in bad we Cr. succ=eded in wiuning the blue ribbon of the Turf,in other words hbe has never owned & The stable and rooms at Enowsley are panneled in dressed oak about six feet high, the walls and~ceilings being hard finished and painted some light neutral tint ; the floor stone pipe«<liyed daily, single plateâ€"glass lantern with gas, being in the centre of each. The rooms, fifteen by twenty feet square, each conâ€" tains one pair of horses, the room being someâ€" times (generally) divided into two loose boxes. At present there are between sixty and seventy horses at Knowsley, including about thirty carriage horses. All the latter are dark brow n horses, and about fifteen hands three inches high. Of course they are in superb condition. Their clothing is made of white cloth with the Earl‘s coronet and crest worked in blue and red in the corner The borses cost from £200 to £600 a piece. ‘The whole stud being valued at £26,000. Everything is in the finest possible order, there being a groom and helper allowed to every four horses. There are thirty five grooms and six coachmen at Knowsley, thirtyâ€"fire men and five women in in the giden, twentyâ€"five lodges and gates in the park, and fifty other cottages for gardeners and gamekeepers, &c. The Duke of Buccleugh owns the next best stables, which are situated at Dalkeith Place, near Edinburgh. The Duke is a hunting man, and bas avstud of ninety firstâ€"class weight carrying hunters and hacks, The stables are built on much the same principle as those at Knowsley. » The speciality at Dalkeith is the saddleâ€" roomâ€"beautifully finished and furnished, with a fine bright soft coal fireâ€"surrounded on the four sides by saddle racks, on each of which is the saddle, and under the double bridle bits and chaing, and over the name of the horse to which they: belong. The chains, bits and stirrups are kept brighter than the newest silver, Here, also, as clsewhere, all bunters as soon as they come in are immodlnely waslod over from head to foot, and then double blanâ€" keted and leftfor half an hour. At the end of that time, they are uncovered and found perâ€" fectly dry and clean only requiring to be what is technically called © polished off." * The Duke of Beaufort. is the greatest Nimrod in England: His unâ€" rivelled pack hunt every day in the woek and bis stables at Badminton, Gloucestershire, cr » of course on an immense scale. In addition to about ninety hbunters, there are quantities of hacks, curriage horses, ponies, &¢, for the Duchess and her children. The Duke requires twelve fresh bunters «very day (rain, snow er storm never deter him from going out); three for himself, three for the Marquis of Worcester, who is caly n‘n ‘teenâ€"the Duke about fortyâ€"three for the hunteman, and one for each of the three whippersâ€"in. o e t The horses are always sent the night before to the mect, unless it may be within five miles when they are ?ll;xd overFery early in the morning. NC * The dogsare sent over in three vans, each drawn by four mules, â€" The Duke always drives over in & fourâ€"inâ€"hand drag ; changing horses every ten miles, the change being sept over like the hunters, either the night before .or very early in the morning. 1 A correspondent of the New York Evening Post, who has lately made a tour through the hunting counties of Great Britain, says that the life of most Enilohh counz gentleman between 30 and 60, who can to subscribe £5 a year to a hunt, is from 10 in the morning to .6 in the evening in the saddle, in red cost, blue cravat, white breéeches and top boots. During the Autumn and Winter there are meets of different packs every day, except Bunday, at diitances from t:':w thirty miles from :‘y and every place w your may happen to If the hounds meet at omnu distance, you either ride over quietly on you rhunter or, sending him very early in the morning, you ride over on your hack, and find your bunter fresh for you at the place where the hounds threw off. « 2 _ If on the contrary, the meet (usually at 11 o‘clock) takes place twenty or_fl!‘q -6-_ s off, The Senate of the Robertsâ€"Sweeney Fenians has been assembled and addressed by the Presiâ€" dent of this faction. Roberts violently © pitches into" the O‘Maboney party, calling them swinâ€" dlers, traitors und by pocrits, whose only object is base, personal gain, at the expense of the suffering patriots of Ireland, and winds up es# follows, after astrong appeal for more funds :« I trust the new narters will meet your approbation.
