_ The astounding robbcries of banks, exâ€" presses and individuals, which have surprised us during the past two months, call to mind a similar affair which occurred about twentyâ€"five years ago, and is probably the shrewdest case of roguery, on the largest scale, on record. 1t was preceded by the famous forgeries by Col. Monroe Edwardsâ€"about $62,000â€"and which led to the duel between Tom Marshall, of Kentucky, and Gen." James Watson Webb, of the New York Courier & Enguirer, whereby the General got a ball in the leg, and quarters in the Penitentiaryâ€"whereof the older of our readers will remember. The gobberyâ€"or forâ€" geryâ€"of which wm was originated and preparéd in the of Logisiana, in New Orlcans, but by whom was never positively known. The rogue was.supposed to be a noted English burglat, named Reed, but this was never proved. . _ P . The bank of Louisiana had&a special plate ofits own for its blank drafts, and a special paper for correspondence, and specially made writing ink. The burglar first secured a free entrance to the bank by taking impressions of the locks, and then fitting keys to them. For four months, it was eotl-a, he entered the ban# in the night, at his pleasure, and, withâ€" out disturbing anything, procecded at his lvisure to inform himself of the routine of the bank‘s businessâ€"in the meanwhile practicing 4o imitate the handwriting ot the cashier. * made to the States. Two points are settled, namely, both parties are authorized to increase "their armaments on the lakes, and that the United States bind themselves to repress by force, if need be, any Fenian attempt upon the British provinces. The salary of the Governor of California is $14,000 in gold. & * THE MOST ADROIT ROBBERY ON ~â€" mm""~ RECORD. When the fall business season approached, he took a schedule of the various amounts to the credit of the bank, in the hands of other banks and bankers, on the mul-i to New York â€"cut, neatly a supply of blank from the rear of. the draftâ€"bookâ€"provided himself with the special paper and itk of the bank, and then procéeded in this wise :â€"»He wrote letters in the cashier‘s style to certain banks and bankers, notifying them that Mr.â€"â€" had purchased drafts on them, of certain dates and amounts. . He then wrote to the same: parties, hnmm‘:fiymmn in the same manner, and enclosi of each, draft, as a 'cad‘ agninst any mistake. , â€" He then started, collecting at the several ‘points as he went, his Jast draft being $22,000 om Jacob Little & Co.. of New Yorkâ€"the wholeamount being ‘itoo.and then disappeared. It was some weeks before the frauds were discovered â€"â€"but the thief was in England, probably, long before and safe from danger. More than a million newâ€"laid eggs a day, it is said, &re imported from France to England. During 3 present year, up to the 2nd inst,, 48,661 have arrived at New York, an increase of over the arrivals during the same time k A basket maker named Rhinchardt, has been arrested at Kingston, N: {‘.,hfin murdcring six illegitimate infants, of which he was the father. x La Minerve‘asserts that a new reciprocity treaty between British North Ancrica and the United states is agreed upor. Peabody, master of Ihmlnupl-n Wright, has written a letter an account of the treatment of the choleraâ€"cases which occurred on his vessel in January last, during a trip from Liverpool to New York. Captain Peabody says that within fortyâ€"cight hours after sailing, cholera appeared, and in ten days twentyâ€"seven passengers had died of it, though they were treated * by the book." ‘The capâ€" tain then applied a method of treatment that had been recommended by.h:“c-doemin command, and did not lose r patient on that voyage or since. ‘The remedy was this : A tablespoonful of salt, and a tablespoonful of Mm,h.wmm water. The captain says ho was attacked by vioâ€" lent cholers, cramp, etc., but the medicine *carried nim through." . He adds:â€"* The medicine acts quickly as an emetic, say in one or two minutes. ltiflmlpnvcyofl‘cndve matter, which sticks like glue. Its use is quite general in Liverpool, where even some of the regulat doctors find it to their advantage to resort to it.
