This is perhaps the oldest met the entire million of New York city inhabitants. It is Captain Lahrbnsh, formerly of the British army, but for the last twenty years I resident of New York. He was born in London on the 9th of March 1765. It is not extravagant to say that hrs life has been most remarkable, embracing more various and extraordinary experiences than that of any-one now liv, ing in any quarter of the globe. lie en- tered the military service of Great Baitain in October 10, 1789, and fought ‘under the Duke of York with this Sixtieth rifles in liolland,in the campaipn of 1793. Five years later he was present when Humbert surrendered to Lord Cornwallis at Balli- nanck, in Ireland. In 1801 he was with Lord Nelson at the taking of Copenhagen. In 1806-7 he was an attache of the suite of C'astlereazh at Vienna,,and on the 22nd of June of the latter year he witnessed the menmruble interview between Napoleon and Alexander at 'rilsit. During the next two years he was with the Duke of Wer. lington in the Spanish peninsula, and was knighted at Talavera,' having receeeived promotion for distinguished gallantry at unsaco. In the year 1811 he went to the 'Cape of Good Hope, and bore a prominent part in Caffre Tar of 1813. When Napoleon was imprisoned at St. , Helena, Capt. Lahrbush was charged with his personal custody as commander of the Guard, a delicate and responsible duty, which he performed for the greater part of 1816-17. The 1blkysitygyear, wearying in the military profession, he sold his eommU. I sion in the Sixtieth rifles, and retired to private life, but subsequently went to Aus- tralia in the capacity of superintendent of a convict station at Cathnrs, and in 1837, at the age of seventy one, removed to Tahiti. From this point he made many‘ voyages to the East Indies, to China, and to different parts of South America In‘ 1842 in consequence of having taken sides (with the Protestant missionaries against) the Roman Catholic' propaganda, he was forcibly. removed by the from Tahiti to France, and took occasion of his removal to travel on the Cortinent. . In 1847, when eighty-one years of age, he undertook the management of Lord Howard de Welden's estate in the island ofJamaiea, and in 1848 came with his widowed daughter and grandson to New York. Both mother and child died soon after their arrival, leaving him, at his ad- vareed age, lonely indeed. But the old man lives on till the present moment in the enjoyment of unimpaired and a truly wonderful degree of bodily health. .7552 101mm PAGE. In 1866 he celebrated his one hundred and first birthday at I breakfast in the house of an eminent gentleman of New York, where many officers and citizens were invited to meet him. His appear‘mee is that of a hale man, and as seen in church he looks junior to many others in the con- ssreaation. . . a The most surprising fact connected with the old gentleman's prolonged life is, that for many years he was in the daily habit of taking tseventy-fire grains of opium, and on one occasion he took one hundred and fifty grains'in a dose. Though he has long abandoned the use of the drug, he. he feels certain he could drink half a pint of laudnnnm with impunity. Capt. Lahrhush is said to retain with! surprising freshness some of the grandest‘ and most imposing scenes and events of modern history, of which he had been the eye witness. He speaks of Blueher as having been very good company, but a heavy drinker, who swore terribly " Na- poleon. Louisa, the Queen of Prunia,he thought the handsomest woman of . her time, and Alexander of Rania the most elegant looking pan in Europe. A: dor Napoleon, whose face he had abundant op- portunity to study, he declares that no likeness that was ever taken of him conveys the proper idea of his features and their expression. The closest resemblance, he says, is that of the coins of the empire especially the profile upon the fiv6-fraste pieces. K Born in 1722 in the North Main street region, he moved, wlule a young man, Into the eastern part of the town, now Lknown as South Wilbraham; married in 1743, and was tre iirrst-deaeon of the church there, continuing in ofAeo any In Dr. Alfred Booth's " Reminiscence- of 8pringiield," occurs the following ac- count of Deacon J ohn Hitchcock: years. During along life hewu ogwon- derful strength, agility 3nd endurance, and had he lived in the palmy dnya .of Greece, he would have "been" a iorthy competitor in the games ot those days. It is related of him that on one oteassiea, I mm ridin by the field where he was at work, auditioning of thespeed of his base, was challenged by the deacon, who said he could run to Springfield quicker on foot than the horse with his rider could. The test resulted in this trumph’of the deacon: distance ten miles; time not stated. He would lift a cartload of hay, by getting his shoulders under the axle, in a stooping posture, and throw an empty cart over with one hand, by taking hold of the end of the axeltrce. ll' hen loading grain in acart, he would take a bag by the teeth, and with I swing and the aid of a push, from the knee, throw it into the cart. Me had double teeth in front, and would hold a tenpenny nail by them and break it df with his lingers. He used to say he did not know. a man he could not whip or run own from! The day he was seventy years CIT, he remarked to his wife, that when they were first married, he was wont to amuse ae. by taking down his hat with his foes, and added, "I wonder if I could do it now?" On 'i‘hurSday, the 24th September, the owner of the canoe Midge crossed the Irish channel from Donaghadee fo Portpatrick [in his little craft. The passage, owing to an unfavorable wind and cross tides, occupied seven hours, during which the canoeist, although provided with a regular canoe cuisine and materials, in addition to his luggage, was unable to take other refreshment than bread and cold meat, with some brandy and water. On arrii'ingxat l’ortpatrick, the Scotch people at first refused to believe that " the man sitting on the water " had really come from Ireland: but when convinced of the fact they hesrtily joined in the cheer with i which the pa-engers and sailors of the Donaghadeeand Portpatrick steam packet welcomed the solitary adventurer. Since the days when our remote aucertortr, in skin-covered ooraclcs', crossed the seas be- tween the islands, this is perhaps the first time so small a vessel has traversed the same channel.
