BULBS' OP “ll AND JOHN aocuss'rmlgn, As enquiries Jtre constantly being made regarding the position in which volunteers of various periods of service are placed'un- der the new Militia Law in reference to such. service, we give the answers to those which have come under our' notice, plainly and as briefly as possible: lst. Volunteers who had on the first of Octuber, 1869, eompleted their full period of five years' service are entitled to their discharge in the usual way. i} 2nd. Volunteers who had on the first of October, 1869, completed three iears' eon- i tinuous service will be entitled to their dis- charge after six months from the date of re-enrolluient in their corps, provided they l give the necessary notice at the time they l re-cnroll. _ . 3rd. Volunteers who have not completed three years continuous service prior to the first of October, 1868, and re enroll to complete their period of service, aymothe,. permitted to leave their corps withoutgiv- in: six months' notice. 4th. Volunteers who rc-enroll under the new Law are, of course, bound by the terms at the hind of the service roll which they sign; and the word " Volunteer" applies to the offieers as well " to the men of the corps so re-tttrolled.--)" br- vice (luzrtlr. ' w HATEYER objections were.taken to the new Militia Law by theVolunteer force at the time of its passage in the Legisla- ture seems to be so far overcome that there is no apprehension on the part of the Mili- tia authorities) that the full quota of Tol- untcers will not re-curoll. Copies of the law and service rolls were sent on the 1st of October to District Staff Officers for distribution to the various corp, and, doubtless before this, all have received them through the proper channel. The result is that lists of re-enrolled companies from every part of the country are begin- lung to pour into the Department of the Adjutint:Gjncral. Besides'this evidence of a dyirc on the part of old companies to accept service under the new Law, there are many and pressing applications from every district on the part of new com- panies desirous of recognition. Of course, the old organizations having the preference, V a positive answer cannot be given to new companies until the three months al- lowed for reorganization has expired; but in any case the Province of Ontario will, according to present appearances, maintain a purely voluntary force as its portion of defence. In the Province of Quebec also, there is, evidence of a fair portion of. Vol- unteer corps coming forward and accept- ing the situation under the new Law. These evidences of the patriotic feeling of the Volunteers is very satisfactory; and when we have behind them the whole lit- serve Militia, properly organised and ohieered, both the advance guard‘of Vol. unteers and the country will feel a con- fidence in the ability to meet and repel any. attack or invasion that ma be threatened, that they could not feel no e the old sys- tem, with the Militia-the ack bone of the country in any exten d struggle--. wholly unorganized. Bunsen-Loanmo Rinse IN Tu EUROPEAN AiuuEs.--The whole army of the North German Confederacy is armed with the Prussian needle gun. Bavaria has adopted the Warner gun; Baden, Wurtemberg and Darunrtadt, have the needle-gun. By the end of July Inst, Austria had 300,000 Wage] guns. The French army is thoroughly provided with Chassepots. On the lst of October, the Belgian army had changed all its old mus- ‘kets for the Albidi rifle. In Italy 32 bat- talions had the Prussian needle-gun im- proved. From 1867 the whole British army is provided with the Snider rifle. However, this arm has not been-found sufficiently satisfactory to prevent further iehanze. The Martini rifle' appears to be lapproved by a commission appointed by the War Otiiee. In this gun iheorhole of the present mechanism and lock is replac- ed by four or five pieces enclosed in ' water tight cavity. The explosion of the charge is _':),",',")?,, arod and spirals‘pring. With this gun 1 shots havebeen fired per minute without aiming and 28 shots in two minutes aiming at a target 440 yards distant striking 23 times. The Martini gun costs 8 to 10 shillings less than any other breech-loader. It iithought that it Ii l soon be adopted by the whole British army. Danish and Swiss troops are armed with Remington rifles. Russia is manu- facturing large quantities of Clarke rifles. Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Holland, have l not ytt much altered their armaments for want of means.
