The Atlantic and Pagifc,. the Great Westero, and other American C:mpanies have invaded the field, and hate become successful conrtiwn for the public patronage and support, These Companies, actirg on the cheap postag« principie, have foreed the old monopolist to a reduction of rates, which has resulted in a more widely extended uso of this means of communication, and much to the surprise of the Western Union itself, has increased its profits, whilst sharing its field of operations. s The success of a Telegraph Company will main‘y depend on its ability to meet the demards of the public, and consequently it should possess, stleast, equal facilitiee with any other Company, of access to a‘l quarters with which its customers may desire to have communication. All classes of Society are interested in extending the use of the Telegraph, at Low rarks, and the Directors are satisfied, that the adoption of a scaie of charges considerabiy beiow the rates now exacted in Canada, wil} by encouraging a much more extended use of this mediam of communication, not only prove a real and substantial benefit to the pablic gonerally, but will also ensure a sate and profitable return to the Investor. The admitted importance and value of Telegraphy, would, in the op‘inion of the Directors, have rendered smy introduction of the Dominion Telegraph Company so the Canadian public unnecessary had it not been that previous atempts to establ:ish Telegraph Oongnin in Canada, to share the business with the Montreal Company, had been allowed to fall through. ~ On the 25th day of June, A.D., 1868, the DOMINION TELEGRAPH [ â€" TERED pecording {o i N COMPANY was duly CHAR The business relations ketween these two Companies continue in fullâ€"force, but the patents having run out, the monopoly so long enjoy od by the Western Union has ceased to erist.
