The sale on the Lake on Friday night was attended with disaster to poor mariners who were out on that dreadful night. A schooner named the Jane Ann Harsh, laden with cord wood from the Bay of Quinta, ran aground upon the island writ of the gap, whilst trying to reach the port. In consequence of the darkness of the night and the drifting snow, it was impossible for the captain or crew to i distinguish the lights, and yhilet in a state of great uncertainty as to the position of the schooner, she grounded on a sandhar, about. l two hundred feet from shore, but it was found next to impossible to launch a boat, owing to the breakers which were dashing over and into the ill-fated vessel. It was then about seven o'clock in the evening, and the crew after ex- hausting their strength in fruitless efforts to attract attention, by calling fur assistance, had to make up their minds to remain on board, if possible, till morning. The men, seven in number, took to the rigging, but owing tothe dreadful cold In of them determined to dercend to the cabin, which was found nearly full of water, in preference to {reeling to death in the rigging. The captain, however, and one man, resolved to remain in the rigging all night in hopes of attrscting attention earl y in the morning, rightly judging that in case they returned with their companions to the cabin they would be so hennmbed with cold that they might he unable to take means to place themselves in such a position that they could be readily seen from shore. in this condi- tion the poor fellows had to spend the night. Fortunately for the shipwrecked aatlora lhair dangerous position can ditcoverod a lit. tle after acnn o'clock on Saturday morning by Mr. David Ward,an old fiahertntut resid- ing on the island; and with all poaliblo speed he tsurtueqtmce to Na home, and accur- " thr atai~tance of his son Willlam, and Robert Berry, the well-known coloured can- man. They then launched a boat on the hey and young Ward and Berry started " so fast as possible till they arrivtd opposite to where the schooner was lying. .They then went ashore and dragged their boat across the island, and with great diiticulty succeeded in launching their craft. in the lake. After pro- ceeding forty or titty yards, however, in the direction of the schooner their host was swamped by a breaker that dsshed over it. The two gellsnt men clung to the but, and succeeded in righting her, and msnsged to make another more successful attempt to save the lives ot the furnishing sailors. Upon, reaching tho schooner they took two ot ther; men on and conveyed them to the shore? Ward and Berry returned to the schooner and I rescued three others. There now remained, two men on the wreck, and as their position l w“ "cry moment becoming more criticsl, the greatest efforts were made by Ward and Berry to save them; but, unfortunately, when making another effort the boat wss again swsmped, and it was with the greatest din... unity that the breve fellows and their lives. Uetting the lost egsin righted, however, the lgnllant fellows, nothing denoted, made s 1 further effort to reach the vessel, and finally , succeeded in doing so, and in carrying " the other two men. ‘The poor fellows were " most exhausted from exposure. their clothes being frozen to their bodies. They were con- veyed to the n sidence of Mr. David Ward, and kindly cared for until the afternoon, when they were brought to the city. The l schooner in: total wreck, and the cordwood ’ of course was washed sway. A considehble ) quantity of it wsseaet ashore on the island. There was no insnrsnce on either the Vessel or cargo. Too much praise cannot be he. stowed upon the two pliant fhrhttrrneat who were the means, at the risk of their own lives, of rescuing these seven shipwrecked mariners from a watery grave; and "is to be hoped that a substantial mark of the appreciation of (their heroic cbnduct by the public wilibo Mmâ€.
