HEUNGARY. PRU3SIA. FRANOE. SICILY Madoc Morcury . For the last two or three weeks, there has been nothing fresh to report; but we now have a few items to note for the bencfit of those who still feel an interest in the developâ€" ment of gold mining in this district. That the movement 1s not dead, the people of this village have had audible proo‘? during the last few days â€"the sound of the stcamâ€" whistle at the Richardson Mino crusher, though six miles and a half distantâ€"having been heard, both morning and evening, when work was commenced and finished thero for the day. The nows from that quarter, so far, is quite encouraging ; for we understand that the managing supcrintendent, Mr. J. H. Dunâ€" stan, has succeeded in still further reducing the cost of operations below the point menâ€" tioned some weeks ago; so that, now, even from the refuse rock (which is the quality reâ€" cently crushed) the returns have been equal to three times the working expenses. This is a most decided" turn in the long lane of disappointments and failures which has been so long travelled by the pioneers of gold minâ€" ing industry in the Quinte Division ; and it is to be hoped that a point has now been reached from which a fresh start will soon be made in a new direction. * Herarorc Axixars.â€"Among the wild anâ€" imals are elephants lions, tigers, wolves, bears, antelopes, stags, lynxes, porcupines, foxes, and wild boars, not to mention hogs and pigs and piglings innumerable, longâ€" tailed, shortâ€"tailed, and curlyâ€"tailed. Conâ€" cerning all these denizens of the forest,, the most remarkable thing is the unanimity that reigns among them in regard to one porticuâ€" lar matter ; what Iâ€"meano is, that, with an occasional exception in favor of the pigs and piglings, one and all of them stand on their hind legs. Whatever else they may do, they are sure to do that ; with their fore feet and paws they may push against some shield or hatchment, they may grasp as best they can a dagger or a battleâ€"axe, or flourish their tails aloft and expand their nostrils as if eager for the fight ; but under any circumâ€" stantes they decline to settle down on all tours, so that I am foreed to conclude that the position which is natural to their conâ€" geners is foreign to them. With regard to some of them there are certain cabalistic exâ€" pressions used which it is possible, it one could get at their signification, would throw some light on their history. Thus, concernâ€" ing a leopard with spotson his body as big as pancakes, i; is gravely stated that he is * countercompony of the first and second.‘"‘ If the reader can solve the mystery involved .n that expreasion he is : a much cleverer fellow thanI am. ~Again, a rorcupine pousâ€" setting, who has had his quills combed down smooth and sleek, is described as * gyrouny of eight,""‘ which expression is also too crabbed for my powers of peaetration. A lion who geems to stand ill at ease, as though on one leg rather than two, presents an inigma someâ€" what less »difficult ; concerning him it is said, "lion‘s garb erased in bend within a boudure, by which I understand some acciâ€" dent or other to the animal‘s leg; gamb means leg, of course, and the erasure, which must be an injury of some kind, may have been consequent on the brute‘s having put his foot into chancery somehow or other, as seems to me to be intimated by the terim "* within a boudure." In the case of one of the lynxes, I find the expressions made use of to describe him, or it may be someâ€" thing belonging to him, are " a bend cotised sa,‘"* the purport and propriety of which, T‘ am sorry to say, I am not lynxâ€"eyed enough to discover.â€"leisure Hour. ‘ bas been experimenting simply to test the value ot the process, with reterence to workâ€" ing the ores, both here and in the Western States the result obtained being _ most Eatisfactory to himself. It consists "merely of the cylinder in which the ore is subjected to the action of a primary current of electricity. This clears the ore of all oleaginous matters that impede amalgamation, and renders the quicksilrer about 60 per cent. more active. Some of the mercury we were shown, which had been recovered after being worked with ore, looked as bright and lively as if it had been treated with Wurtz‘s sodium amalgum. The great difference in the appearance of the crushed ore, after it has been through the cyâ€" linder, clearly indicates that the process has some considerable effect upon it.
