Toâ€"night Miss Marriott, the great English trage~ diemn? makes her appearance in Sheridan Knowles‘ play of * The Hunchback," when a fall house may be expected. The reputation U Miss Macriott is well knownâ€"in Montreal and other Canadian cities, as well as throughâ€" Out the States and in England. L & Waxts in our Posuso Scnoous.â€"â€"Our Comâ€" mon School system has been making great progress of late, not ouly in the architectural appearance of school buildings, but also in the efficien« yrof their management. Trustees are in earnest in furnishing the accommodaâ€" tion so long a necessity in this city, and teachers, under the wholesome and invigote ating ‘influence wrought, are determined that they will not be behind in the matter of the education of the rising youth,. There are one or two things yet, however, that we might #dvert to as being accessary, by way of supplement to the many improvements already made ; wo refor toâ€" the introduction of vocal music and the gymnasium into our Schools. In regard to music no one will call in question its utility, and it learned in carly youth will greatly accelerate an accomplishâ€" ment, which, in riper years, takes more time and money to acquire, than many people can easily afford. ‘There is, wo learn, at present, a gentleman in the city who has opened a series of classes, and has given some very successful lessons in the Central School East, whom we have no doubt the Board of School Trustees could engage to teach vocal music in both our Central Schools, and we advise those in authority to make the most of the excellent opportunity thus afforded. We also hope to see some steps taken towards the erection of appropriate Gymnasiams, at each of the Central Schools, under the instruction of some competent instructor. Cowuwor Scuoor Exaxtzatos.â€"Toâ€"mortow morning at nine o‘clock will be commenced the examination of the pupile of the Central School East, Georgeâ€"st., near Cumberland, Those who desire to know for themselves the progress that has been mads in our Common Schools should not wait till the awarding of prizes, but atteud toâ€"morrow and on the fol= lowing day at the examinations, and test the knowledge of the pupils in the various branches in which they are instructed. This should be done by ministers, professional, and ther educated _gontlemen, for the purpose of ascertaining whether or not the public are getting in the education of their children the value of the tazation which they impose upon themselves for this purâ€" pose. The question of pepular education is on the eve of a fuller investigation than it has yet been subjected to in this city, and in order that it may be conducted understandingly it is necessary to know what has been done. On mminhnd-xdb impress on the minds of parents guarâ€" dians the propriety of attending, and now we advise educated men and especially the ministers of religion to attend and subject the pupils to a systematic examination, not with the idea of puszling and frightening the pupile, but in order that they may be able to 'hynmnolmuum the public 10 # wuo spirit=ef philanthropy ; to sug» gest remedies for detects, to confirm what is good, and to facilitate general progress, Tus Hommar® Oremma Trovreâ€"Last night the Holmans produced, with beautiful effect, Balie‘s opera of Satanelia, Whether this is equal in power and expression to this great composer‘s other works we do not pretend to decide. Mr. Crane, the basso and master Aond of the piece, acquitted himself with his usual good jadgment and brought the meaning and spirit of the author most satisfactorily, and did himself credit as a singer as well as actor. The principal char= acters were ably sustaincd by the whole comâ€" pany. â€" The scenery and other accessories were appropriate and eflective. The Outlaw of the Southeast#+A Reward of $10,000 Of@.ed for His Heads== Deseription of the Boldest Desperado of Modern Times, KFrom the St. Louis Democrat. ~_The good psople of Washington and 8t. Francols have fomseveral y-nnsy: kept in awe by the bold and bloody acts of the notoriâ€" ous Sam Hildobrand. ‘This man, it is said, has murdered at least eighty persons in those counties and Arkansas, When the rebelHoo broke onthmdtbo cause of the rebels, and became a and ruthless bushwhackâ€" er,. It has been asserted that he suffered inâ€" ry at the hands of a Union officerâ€"having is house burned down and his family driven forth homeless and shelterless. Whatever of truth or falsehood may be in these stories, it is cortain that Hildebrand became a desperate and unscrupulous man, He wreaked a terâ€" rible vengeance upon those who Rad been his enemies, shooting men down in their fields and by the wayside, buroing houses and outâ€" All attempts to kill or capture this man have proved â€"abortive. He bas been hunted by companies of determined men, tracked by detectives from the city, but has al ways eluded pursuit and successfully resisted attack,. A to ys ago we gave an account of an atâ€" FM capture Hildebrand by the sheriff ot -:In(h-‘oouty and a squad of fifteen or sixteen men, which resulted in the wounding of the sheriff, the killing of one of his men, and the escape ot the outlaw, Bince then renewed efforts have been made to arreat the dewxperado, and in order to effect the object a reward of $10,000 has been offered It is probable that this large amount will induce men wf nerve and shrewduess to un dertake his capture; but it is generally beâ€" lieved that Hildebrand will never be taken alive. Hoe knows that ho will receive no mercy at thé bhands of the law, and that his urnn will result in ignominious death. _ It is conjectured that Hildebrand is making his way toward the Mississippi. Those who brma t pnrerrint io n aeriaen, hok alarmed, and are now anxzious that he should be brought to justice. It is hoped that the people of the river towns will be on the lookout for him.
