Evans who was arrested and put in jail last week, though very quiet and tractable at times, is at other times full of low cunning, and, when least expected, violently attacks the first person she meets, On Saturday last as she seemed very quiect and peaceable, she was allowed to go out where there was another female lunatic, whom she fell upon and assaulted in a cruel manner, so that shebbad to be removed to ber cell‘ again. This poor maniac‘s case, from what little wo have heard of it, would be an interesting study to the psychologist, and to ' the philanthropist. It appears that her mothe! is insane, and as such bas been for many years an inmatg of the asylum for the insane at Toronto, Mrs. Evans in her girlhood was a good, quiet, wellâ€"behaved young person,. One or two of her brotkers were believyed to be affiicted with mentsal abberrations at times, and she herself bas of late become so bad that the utmost vigilance was necessary to restrain _ her from mischicf. Aun idea of her watchfulâ€" ness and cunning may be formed from her conduct just before and at the time of hber arrest, _ Mer husband, afraid every moment that shoe would commit some horrid doeed, and believing with his friends that she should be placed under legal restraint, made everything as safe as he could about the hbouse, and amongst other precantionary measures drove a large spike into the lid of the well which was in the yard, for the purpose of fastening it so securely that there would be no possibility of her geiting it open, Shortly aftâ€"r the husbasd left to go to the Police Station, policeman Pinard arrived at the house to remove her. , â€" Sleo instantly diviged his object, and the more effectually toâ€"wcarry out her object she boecame pertectly calm, and began calling hber chiliren together, saying sho wanted to see them all right beâ€" fore going away. In moving about from place to place, she sidled up to the well, of ‘the exâ€" istence of which the policeman was ignorant though he was standing near :t. She waited her opportunity, and catching him with his head turned in another direction, quick as thought raised the lid and plunged head foreâ€" most in. Pinard seized a ladder, which was fortunately on the spot, put it down and succeeded in getting her out. She was then properly secured, and is now in jail awaiting the time when she shall be removed to Kingâ€" ) ston. Here is a case like many others of the insane child of an insane mother, with chilâ€" dren who like their mothcr,.and perbaps their grandâ€"mother, will have inherited madness to transmit it to their posterity, How is this direful calamity to be prevented ? Can it be prevent d ? Canarational attempt be made? He who will manfully approach the subject will be a public benefactor, though he sucâ€" ceed in ever so small a degree,. Insanity is increasing in this locality to a f.ighttal extent, and it is high time that the subject engaged the attention of men capable of dealâ€" inog with it understandingly. The system of Storm Signals which was inâ€" wmhd by.lbo late Admiral litsroly., although by a great many people, was un« dowitixily of great service. ‘The:Devon and Cornwall men, and the Ashermen of the eastâ€" ern coast, to whom a storm at sea was the gertain loss of hardly earned money and the probable loss of life, looked for the predicâ€" tions of ; the Fitzroy signal with anxious eye venturing out on their fishing trips. They are not men who take quickly to a " new io d idea, and it was only by posiâ€" tive proof that they were induced to believe in any one being able to foretell the weather better than they themselves could do. When they had learnt, bhowever, that the rough knowledge and experience to which they always trusted, was excelled by the scientiâ€" fic observation of an old sailor, and that when he spoke, he spake to some purpose, they came to the conclusion that the storm signals were things of immense value to themselves and everyone . else abunected with the sea. It was proposed at one time to discontinue these signals, and a great cry was at once traised for their continuance, and in obedience to this demand they were resumed. After this the system was introduced in India and md these to be most useful. The storms used to strew the Ganges with wrecks were remembered by those who had lost friends and vessels in them, and the new cauâ€" tion was eagerly consulted and acted upon. The consequence was that vessels |ying at single anchor or moored in the stream were warned in time, and were enabicd to take proper precautions for their safety. It is now proposed to introduce the same thing at Chicago, and the Director of the observatory is to be installéed in the rddu so worthily hâ€"l4 by Admirai itzroy in Eogland, By means of teleâ€" lmphlhoothu lake ports can be served by |the Chicago observatory, and vessels the charge preferred ‘against him by the In. spector of Licenses of selling at an illegal bour. ‘The chief witness being still absent, the trial could not go on, and was adjourned till next Monday..> * enterd putting to sea by some local mm signal. Should the Chicago wbserver prove to be as nearly infallible as was Admiral Fitszroy, the advantage that will accrue to the navigators of the lakes is beyond count. ‘The slightest sucâ€" cess on his part will: be encoutaging, for a chain of observatories could easily be established, and observations so compared by wire that almost perfect accuracy would soon be obtained.â€"@lobe. â€"â€"The Century Plant which the Mayot, corporation and members of the Rochester pross were so kind to show to their visitars, the members of the Canadian Press Associa+ tion, on their visit to that city, is now in full blossgom, forming the greatest floral curi~ oslty, perhaps, ever witnessed in America. o gradually lugs, bur borwe ts above #, but. e top buds have opened those below have goune. wh-flhh really grand, and it ly alttracts great numbers of persons. Ohio, wete startled by hearing the rm whistle for «down breaks." ‘The train stopped in safety, when the following conversation ensued between a beautiful country laas and the coaâ€" ductor : * Mister, will you please take this basket down to Mr. Bsnham !â€"he‘s the exâ€" press agent at Dayton!" " Yos, Miss," reâ€" plied the obliging conductor, "but please never stop my train again, unless you are Certain there is danger ahsadâ€"remember elosing speech in full, and an account of the division, bad but ffteen minutes between going to press and catching the first trains for the country, In that quarter of an hour +5,000 copies were printed.
