Lady Macdonald presided over the meeting. The opening prayer was given by the Rev. Mr. Pollard, after which the annual report was read, also the Tremsurer‘s report, which was adopted. * Mrs, Carlos Bronson was received as a lite member. H.F, Bronson was elected as an bonorary member. ‘The sum of $50 cach, paid, gave evidence of a spirit of charity which invites emulation. _ The office bearers clected are the following ladies : Lady Macdonald, 1st Directress, Mrs. Eddy, _ â€"3rd do. Recording Secretary, Mrs. Thorburp. / Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Eaton. Treasurer, Mrs. Smillie. The meeting was addresscd by the Rev. Masers. Pollard and Moore ; by His Worship the Mayor, and Robert Lees, all of whom are earnest patrons of the good work. Much business was done in the appointment of & general council for the important charge unâ€" dertaken by the benevolent ladies forming the members of the corporation. Much er« couragement was also given by the <gentleâ€" men who " assisted" at the meeting. The reâ€"union was closed by the Rev. Mr. Moore. Aside trom the good work done by this establishment, any person, on visiting the place, yesterday, could not have experienced any other feeling than that noble one which inspires the good ladies who direct its sycâ€" cess. The little creatures felt so much at Aome. The holiday was given, and each came out with her trophy of doil, or other toy, with the joyous countenance which can only be made glad by a pure christian spirit. Messrs Gordon, Johnston, Moore, Pollard, and Gavin, travelling agent of the Society, the Hon. Messrs. Morris and Aikins, and P. LeSueur, Keq. The Cbairman called on the Rer. Mr. Moore to open the meeting by reading of the scriptures, praise, and prayer. The annual report was read by the Râ€"v. Mr. Gavio, and gave cheering in tormation of the progress, and spreading influence of the British and Foreign Bible Society, as well of the work of our own Ottawa Auxiliary, by a largely increased circulation af the Scriptures in the Ottawa Vailley. He past year ; in the success which has attended its operations ; and in the harmony aud prosâ€" perity of this auxiliary." Tha third resolation was moved by Rov. Mr. Gemley, who introduced it *with one of the most instructive, stirring, and eloquent addresses we have ever hbad the opportunity of listening to, and was ably seconded by " That, inasmuch as the Divine authority ot the Scriptures continues to be assaired in many quarters, and in others their sufficiency as the only rule of faiÂ¥@e and duty is imâ€" puguned, this meeting reâ€"asserts the principles, thus opposed, as |ying at the foundation of every Bible Society ; and resolves, in conseâ€" quence, to aim at putting the sacred volume within the reach of all in this region of Can« wisa, and at securing its wider diffusion throughout the world." r and a fuller appreciation of the Holy Writ. He regretted that the increased circulation of the Bible had diminisbed the sacred regard in which it should be entertained. The resolution was as follows, and was seconded kfiy P. Le8ueur, Esq. : " That the thanks of this meeting beâ€"given by the chairman to the speakers trom & dis~ tanceâ€"the Rev. Mesers. Gourley and Thompâ€"~ sonâ€"tor their attendance and addresses on this occasion." A collectiun was taken np, after which the Rev. Mr. Pollard addressed the meeting, in moving the fourth resolution, in a very earâ€" nest and impressive maauner, deploring the present insufficient realization of the great blessing whichâ€"has been extended t» us, unâ€" der Divine Prouvidence, by the eaty access affordâ€"d through the issues of the British and _ Foreign Bible _ Socicty, and its aociliaries, and urged the uecessity of a greater reverence in the use of, The mecting was closed by the singing of the doxology and the pronouncing of the bencdiction by the Rev. PUNCH‘s ALMANAC, 1870, The Frenchâ€"speaking inhabitants of Ottawa will, doubtlessly, be pleased to learn that a newsâ€" paper bearing the above title is about to appear to meet their wants. Aware of the necessity for such a newspaper, in both languages spoken in Ottawa, and which will afford, every evening, the latest intelligence, I have not hesitated to underâ€" take the publication of the Courier, and it shall be my aim in doing so to fully anticipate the requirements and wishes of the inhabitants of the Ottawa valley. The future of Uttawa is promising. Trade is brisk, and there is evidence of present and future prosperity. Hermeans of communication to and from the city, and the facility of estabâ€" lishing additional factories, afforded by the unrivalled waterâ€"power at oér very doors, will do mucl_t to rapidly increase the city of Ottawa.| Confederation has strengthened the social and commercial ties between theâ€"English and French speaking inhabitants of the Dominion, and it shall be the aim of the Courier to cement them still more strongly together. In the views and measures of the existing governmen} the proprietor of the Courier fully concurs, and will endeavour to give it that full measure of support which circumstancer may render necessary, carefully avoiding unnecessary offence to sucn as may differ from us in opinion. We will cultivate a friendly bearing towards the traditions of the past and the actualities of the present, hoping to take a middle but not uncerâ€"| tain course, which cannot fail to be -l,;preciwed . by the inbabitants of the entire valley of the Ottawa. A young people should endesvour to raise themselves to the.level of more advanced naâ€" tionalities, and this they can only do by being made sexuinwd with what is done in other parts of the world. This shall be our task, and we shall also urge such improvements as may tend to increase the means of traffic and the wealth of the community. Our attention shall not, however, be confined to city wants. The roc‘uinmentlbf the husbandman will receive a full share of our attention, knowing that on the cultivation of the soil the merchant and artisan very much depend, It shall, in a word, be our particular object to protect and encourage the agriculturist, and at the same time assist other industries, and to provide agreeable and useful information for mf, in leisure hours. Cornzonduu will always find our columns open to them in which to express their wants or o offer suggestions, provided the opinions exâ€" vressed are consistent with -onllityr and Agent jor OU awa, couched in moderate, though it may be CATN@SE languag*. Let it not be supposed, however, by anything that may have been said, that the attention of the Cowricr will be wholly devoted to local matters. The inulllfim of the hour from every quarter of the giobe will find its way into our columns, the telegraph will be freely made use of, and the latest news will be in every manner, possible obtained. og e P oo cuâ€"â€"AAC t cattar whirh thi TEA COMP ANY. l’”i'lulootl. from the variety of matter which the Courier will contain, and the e’u'i employed in its managepent, the proprietor fully anticiâ€" pates success and u{kd‘“ himself to deserve it. * The Courier will be published every evening at fve o‘clock, and the yearly subscription, of which will be $1 a; 64 ROSPECTITUS Sussex and Sparks Strects.
