T. M Blasjell aud A: Lapage. The wellâ€"known character of all the gentlemen named is a sufficient guarâ€" antee that " fair play and no favor ‘‘ will be the order of the day. To the brigade, we need only say that the public eye will be upon them, and let them see to, it that they allow no blot on that good fame which has no superior in the Dominion of Canâ€" ada. The engine competition will take p!we on Cartier Square, the Hook and Ladder race on York Street, and the Hose Reel race on Rideau Street. Both these races will .afford a fair test of : the muscle, â€" endurance and speed . of the brigade _ generally as _ well as of that of the representatives of other cities and towns who may enter for the races. Members of the committee will be in attendance at the several railway stationâ€" on the arrival of trains to escort visiting companies to proper quarters The whole proceedings will be lookei over with a fatherly eye by the worthy Chief of the Brigade, Mr. John Langford. â€" The gold medal for the winner of the Firemens‘ mile race will be a gem, boing specially designed and n’nurmund at the well known jowellery establishment of our townsmen, Messrs Young and Radfort, The foot races wil take place on Cartier Square ; and the Base Bill, Cricket, and Lmcrosse Mitches on â€" tase Pariiament Square, although we believe the latter place iz not yet definitely settled on. It is to be regretted that the Committee were not financially able to procure‘a good displiy of fireworks for the first night. Perhaps it is not yet too late. A httle from each of the many who have not yet contributed put into the hands of the Committee, would, no doubt be made to throw "more light on the subject" on the night in question. All things considered, ot aly wauih ce the promdters, bat wilt it on 1 boano’noflonglo be remembered with plearure by the citizens as.well as by our numerous visitors. The second day‘s programme is also a varied one. Base ball, cricket, lacrosse, mile races, half mile races, etc , will suc cessively be on the fapis. There are base ball entries from Canton and Ogdensburg, N.Y., Brockville, Kemptville and Ottawa; for Lacrosse from Montreal and Ottawa. For the foot races there are many entries among whom are some very fast amateurs «â€"â€"Stitt of Spencerville and others. We have seen the little Gems which the publishers of HHenry Ward Beecher‘s g religious weekly present to all new sub. scribers to that paper ; and we have pleaâ€" sure in a:ying that the chromos are inâ€" deed perfect treasures of art. The ons represents a child "fiast asleep," and the other "wide awake.‘" The originals were purchased. in Laris, during the seigo, at a price much below their value, and thus it happens that these beautiful chromos can be given awiy lo all subscribers to that able and well conducted “nli‘iom paper; The Ciristian Union, edited by Henty Ward Beecher. Probably no man on this continent is do‘ng so much to mould reâ€" li:ious thought as Mr. Beecher, and his hands should be upheld by every true disciple of Christ. ‘The price of the paper, with the two splendid chromos as a premium, is $3 a year. Of the paper and chromos, the pastor of the Congregationalâ€" ist Church in New â€" huaron, says: ~"1 have no hesitancy in recommending The Chris tian Union as apaper worthy of being in every family. Itis, in my opinion, a firstâ€" class paper, well worth the subscription price. ‘The chromos offtered as a premium to subscribers speak for themselves.
