Stagg of the same place, and Mr. Haggart, M.P., and Mr. Code, M.P.P., (Porth); the Warden of Ren‘rew, and others, left town by the Canmada Central Railroad to be present at the inauguration, or rather openâ€" ing of th: road from Sand _ J‘oint to the thriving and rapidly rising village of Renfrew, situated on the River Bonne. chere, nine miles fiom its confluence with the Ottaws. At Renfrew the Bonnechere falls rapitily about 100 feet, over a bed of white limestone, and the scene is most picturesque. Renfrew is 58 miles distant from Ottawa, and, by rail, about 12 miles from Sand Point. The opening up of the Canada Central, while it will greatly benefit Oitawa, will be of still greater importance to Renfrew, and it is further to be hoped that the line will be still further extended to Pembroke before many months elapse. The traims from Brockville and Ott.wa amalgamated at Carleton Place, arriving at Renfrew about haltâ€"pist one, where lunâ€" cheon was partaken of in the Town Hall. The President of the C.C. R., tion. Mr. Abbott, was in the chair, Nir Francis Hincks and Hon. Mr. Mitchell being on his right, and Sir Hugh Allan, Hon. Dr. Tapper, Hon. Mr Skead and Mr. Galbraith on his left. Through some misapprehension an| to the great regret of the chairman» the leading men of Renfrew were not preâ€" sent. The champagne flowed freely, and | the speeches were most eloyuent, as they | invariably are on all such occasions Tus Parntame®t Hoves® CLoox.â€"Yesâ€" terday afternoon experiments . were being made with a painted clock f1ce on | the grand tower of the Houses of Parliaâ€" ment. Un a board, 14 feet in height by nine in width, fitting exwtly into the groove of the tower intended for the outer clock work, there had been painted by Mr. Wm. Mchay, or some artist in that skilful mechanician‘s employ, the face of | a great clock. One side was blue all over, | the figures, in Roman, extending fifteen inches over the hole in the tower, which is exactly five feet in diameter, being gilded as were the hands. (On the other side, the inside, was exactly the size of the intemded face of the clock, five feet in ‘diunom. in a kind of grey colour, with a bluck rim, on which the time of day, five and twenty minutes pist nine, precisely, was depicted. The blue disl was de~ cidedly the most conspicuous and pleasing in effect when _ hoisted _ up . on high. _ Both _ were _ quite vivid at any ordinary distance. ‘lhe chief diffiâ€" culty will be in the illumination of a dial extending nearly a foot and ‘a h.lf all round over the stoneâ€"built opening. This of course, will be done by convex Or con» cave reflections, keeping the face of the clock at some distance from the wall of the tower and protecting the opering. Here is the question. > The talanted and able Deputy Commissioner of Public Works, who has made the question of light a study, will doubtliessly see that all is right. 1f he says " let there be light," the tower wll be illuminated without difficulty. There will be only 3 illaminatâ€" «1 clock faces. The rear part of the clock tower would be ob cured by the new library so rapidly approaching completion under the careful supervision of Mr. Farquhar. The clock face when introduced into its situationâ€" although merely a double faced shamâ€"added very much to the appearance of the great tower. evening 13. The Mirror. 13. Gnn:tg:omm.n)pie Ncenes.
