The Citizen of last evening calls upon all Lib eralâ€"Conservativesâ€"whoever they may be â€"not to swerve from their party allegiâ€" ance upou this occasion, and to be aware of any candidate who, while professing independence, contests the constituency «s the nominee of the Reform Association. * Let the contest," says the organ, " be a «* square and honest one. fought upon, * political principles." Mr. J. M. Currier, M.P., the gentlieman who nominated Mr, U‘Comnor, and who spoke for him in his «bsence, told the electors that he was . averse to politics in the Local Legislature, and that he thought the business there should be conducted upon similar princiâ€" ples to those prevailing in County Counâ€" cils. Mr. Currier added that he believed these were the sentiments of the yentleman he nominated ; and acâ€" cordingly, so far as we have beer euabled to understand‘ the production which is dignified with the name of an wddress to the electors, Mr. O‘Connor ex. presses himself in terms very much the same. Now, between the Cifizen, Mr: #ilbseription Rates for the Daily Times. ure in that groove, for the very satisfacâ€" tory reason that Mr. Rykert, Mr. Lauder, Mr.~ Boultbee, and that â€"disreputable erowd, were the only sympathizers he and his colleagues had in the whole Province were the subject of public condemnation. Wh.'t-nthb:}n-fimnupax which Mr. O‘Connor takes issue with the present Government of Ontario, and what the poâ€" liey he will advocate if he gets there? We read his learned disquisition upon social order, class legislation, and so on, for the purpose of finding this out, butâ€"we failed presses limself in terms very much the same. Now, between the Citizen, Mr. Currier, agd Mr. ‘Connor, there is appa rently a very important difference :of opinion. _ We presume, however, that the difference is only one of appearance. The organ would like to whip an unwillâ€" ing party into.line with the political lash, while Messrs. Currier and O‘Connor belie by professing independence, if thereby they might mayhap win over an unsus. pecting Liberal here and there to their camp. â€" Mr. O‘Connor must be either one of the two things represented ; he must, as he claims to be himself, be independâ€" ent, or he must be a Tory, as the Citizen represents him. If the issue is fairly â€"understood _ to _ be: political, we «re not _ afraid ; © with _ a _ fair tield and no favour, we areâ€"prepared gladâ€" «ly to take up the glove ; but we desire that the electors should see through this doubleâ€"game: _ Mr. O‘Connor cannot be a Tory and an Independent both, and we believe, his own address and Mr. Currier‘s election speech to the contrary notwith standing, that he is a dyedâ€"inâ€"theâ€"wool" Tory in Provincial as ho is wellâ€"known to bein Dominion politics. â€"This mask of independence, then, has at last"fallen off, Mr. ‘Connor, if elected, will go to Toronto bound hand and foot to ‘the Lauderâ€"Ryâ€" kert party. <If Mr. Cameron is not in the House, and Mr. Rykert is, Mr. Rykert will be Mr. O‘Connor‘s leader, and Mr. O‘Conâ€" nor would be bound to follow him, or sub mit to be stigmatised as a renegade. And Mr. O‘Connor wouldâ€"follow him just as certainly as the planets . are: followed by their satellites _ He could not help himself, for he would be : sent there to do it ; if he could help himselfâ€"and we say this with all the respect to the hon. gentleman which his political record commandsâ€"he would not. His sympathies to find it We are thus forced to the eonclusion that â€"Mr. O‘Connor desires to go to Toronto for no other purpese than to thwart a Government which, not only for its general, but especially for its Crown Lands policy, has been most liberal to the Ottawa district,â€"a Government whose administration of public affairs has been marked by fewer blunders and by more general popularity and success than any that has .ever guided the destinies of the Province. The cry of partyâ€"the loud eall upon Liberalâ€"Conservatives to support the, Opposition candidateâ€"is merely so much sound. We ask the supporters and Election Noticesâ€"D. J. O‘Donoghue.
