Primarily and chiefly that which we have to decide is whether or not the present Government of Ontario is worthy of support and confidence. That, indeed, ‘has practically been solved already. 1t is true that.some of Mr. O‘Conmor‘s friends have professed a desire to ses the Governâ€" ment condemned, but Ms. O‘Connor himâ€" self, in the only instance where he has publicly expressed his views so farâ€"we refer to his addressâ€"does not dare to risk his chances of election upon that . issue. He knows that the people of Ottawa are not prepared to condermn Mr. Mowat‘s Administration, ~and therefore he atâ€" tempts to draw the wool over their oyes by professing independence. . There is openly opposes the Governiment, or dares to say that on a party test he would vote no confidence in them. The question of whether the Government is worthy of swered in the affirmative, what the people have to next decide is, who of the candiâ€" _dates before them can they repose the greatest amount of reliance in, by whom would the interests ol the sity be best served in the Legislature of Ontario, and whose ability as a legislator would be likely to reflect the most credit upon the constituency ? : When â€"we proceed to reâ€" ply to the first of these questions, we may with great safety dismiss the name of Mr. O‘Connor summarily. | It is perâ€" fectly impossible to expect that those who have watched ‘the career of: the hon. except, .. indeed,. . for. the pose . of catching votes; . an« the very reason that he appears to t ling to deceive the people in the h« getting electod, we submit that he F1VE _ CENTS, and C CENTSfor sach word over isements referred to are as Auny one specided afticleâ€" For Sale or Wanted. just as much surprised that his political friends have consented to become parties to . the ‘attempted : deception. â€"| Mr, O‘Connor is â€" not ° an lndqpmda‘atâ€"- except, indeed. for â€" the _ purâ€" gentleman could give any credence to his professions of independence. . We are really surprised thitt he has the boldness to make such professions publicly, and ling to deceive the people in the hope of getting clected, we submit that he would be equally ready, onceâ€"those votes were given and he was elected, to deceive them «gain by his course in . the Legislature. Mr, O‘Connor is not, never was, and never will be an Independent: on the contrary, he is a most violent partizan, and would go to Toronto to clog the wheels of admin" istrative legislation by factious and unâ€" reasoning opposition, belying his promises of independence with as much facility and insincerity as he bhas made them. He does not have the courage to say that he would oppose the Ministry, but he would the price of his political cowardice, be ought to ‘be and will. be elected to stay at home. The people of Ottaws ‘can have no confidence in one whose duplicity is so transparent ; they ought to have and will have no political chameleon whose hue is changed at évery turn, to represent them .in the Legisla To hear Mr. ‘Connor‘s friends on the platform, and to read the arguments of his newspaper organ, people who did not know. better would be di=osed to think that a very giant in intellecs and a perfect paragon of all that is good and great, poliâ€" tically and pum.ll!, was offering his services to the electors of Ottawa.
