The House of Commons did not sit very long on Monday. and yet there was a good deal of interest attaching to its proceedings. These were remarkable, in the first place, for the declaration of the Premier, in reply to Mr. Holton, thatthe Government, as a Government, iproposed to deal with the subject of the Northâ€"west Troubles, and that during the day he would place upon the notice paper a moâ€" tion which would containâ€"a declaration of their policy in the premises. To their op~onents, divided as they are in their opinion of how this question should be disposed of by a broad and ever widening gulf, the announcement my safely be presumed to have been startling, but for very different reasons in the different eases. Those who hoped to embarrass them by exciting the feelings of the peoâ€" ple of the Province of Quebec would popularity among their compatriots in vain, and that the policy of the Governâ€" ment would have bereft them of the only means now left of ingratiating themselves into the favour of the masses of their own ago, when he said, *This is the land God allotted to Cain." ; no good reason why Newfoundland should not be thickly settled, and the seat of thriving lumbering interests and cattle export trade, and any action of the Island Government in that.direction will receive the approbation of the Canadian people, with whom, before many years, the desâ€" tinies of the people of the Colony will doubtless be allied politically, as their intercst= are now, in the main, identical. The,more the resources of ~Newfoundland are developed, the greater appears the libel passed on the island by Jacques Cartier three hundred and fifty years into the favour of the masses of their own Province.« To a certain proportion _ at least of the gentlemen . from .Ontario with whom the Opposition from Lower Canads are usually found acting, the anâ€" nouncement must have been startling from a very opposite cause. Their hope has been to embarrass the Government in quite . another . way, although by very much the. same .means: they, t0oo, Mbo.m'W.d)m»”-;‘ to say that either one or other ‘of these sections of ‘the Conservative party have uh I. s I. Al,u iA‘ would not be very daring toâ€" risk the asser ings have assisted their consciences out of that the fertility of the soil would repay the holders of land, after the supply of its indigénous produce was/ exhausted, the Governor of the Colony hasâ€"acted wisely in recommending the construction of a railway across the island in order to deâ€" velop its tesources, first, by opening up eligible land for settlement, and, second, by making one of its ports nearest to Europe available for the receipt and desâ€" patcK" of Ameriean and Canadian mails. It is to be hoped that the energetic policy thus sketched out in the Governor‘s speech will be acted upon by the Governâ€" ment, and the measures, if found,as prac ticable as they. appear to be, carried by unanimous consent. There seems to be U cording to Mr. Murray, there need be no difliquity whatever in obtaining access to this séction, for the streams are ample and only require trifling improvements to prouused during this session, prominent among these being a bill to remove the restrictions on lumbering, and to throw open the timber lands of the colony to al! comers who comply with the necessary regulations, which will be as few and simple as possible. This legislation will no doubt have the effect of inducing some of the large lumbering firms to commence operations among the pine forests which have been recently discovered by Mr. Alex. Murray, the @Geologist of the Isiandâ€" A survey ‘made of the Garden River country resulted in the discovery of five thousand square miles of good !nnba iand, where an immense jumber® trade wight be carried on successfully. .
