l« uvul.h«l e @ouls per week i1 Qanada, LX The aftinity between the Tory who dis owns Toryism and the Protectionist *n believes only in incidental Protect obvious and remarkable. It is not surâ€" prising to tind the organs of the party of the first part caliing upon its affiuity, the party of the second part, to join hands, to enter into a league of mutual offence and defence ; and, of course, for that is the inevitable implication, abandon distinct political andâ€"economic principle, and set out upon an illogical, absurd, and incobhesive platform. it remains to be seen how successful ‘the Gaze/le and its fellow |abourers in the same cause will be in their recruiting scheme for the ragged regiments of the once great Conservative army. There are a great many protectionâ€" ists, and incidental protectionists who are not Tories, not even Conservatives, who will see through the too thin garb of camdour and good faith assumed by the organs and the wire pullers of the oppo siyon. ‘Thereare on the other hand now a few in the rank and fileâ€"of the Couserv: ative force, who : "are ‘~ Kree â€"‘Traders of the most pronounced type. Let us see, say in the course of a fow months, with what readiness these respectively will THE WEEKLY TIMES aud deaths with f subscription Hates (or the Daily Ti For Ningit goou deal â€" of _ paper. Jhe subject is _» â€" very much â€" hackneyed one. It is not probable that before the mille: nium at any rate the differences between the Free Traders and the Protectionists will be removed, and both become of one way of thinkiny.. Tnat state of things must be held to belong to the time when the »mb and the, lion shall lie down toâ€" gether ; and that will not be in our day. ~ For our own part, we believe in the princip‘e of" free trade. The doctrine of protection is losing its hold upon the public mind, and is passing away before enlightened poputar opinion. ‘The Proâ€" tectionists are a gooâ€"l deal like the Tories. They are timid and apologetico when ques tioned as to what they are. Here and thore, nowâ€"aâ€"days,we find a Tory whmn the cour age to call himslf a Tory ; but most of them aré Conservatives more or less liberal. Bo _ it is with _ those who cling to the exploded fallacy of pro tection. Rome of them, entrenched beâ€" bind their coutined circle of reasoning, venture to«leelare boidly that they are Protectionists ; the majority, bov!eur, will tell you that they ave free traders but that a country must nurse its young and strugsling manufactures, niust protect its agriculturists against the superubundant pro«ductiveness of a neighbouring country, must develope its mining interests, and so on. They are not Protectionists, no,â€" not they ! but they ask that everything shall be protected. _ When the expoâ€" nents ol a principle are found to be ashamed _ of their faith _ and _ to deny it, it has ceased to _ be formidable. The Protectionists who are so weak in the knees us to stay themâ€" selves by incidental protection, and they are now the great bulk of the professors of that ancient faith, bave practically yielded the whole questior. The problem then Lecomes one of how far to go in the direction of entire freedom of trade. The question becomes one not any more of principle, but wholly of expediency. Notice t Vhresbhir A wreat deat of space in yesterday‘s issue of our contemporary ‘ha Montreal Gazetie was devoted to a subject out of which itought to be as difficult to make };omicd capital as to ‘draw sunbeams rom cucumbers. The subject in question is the trade policy of the country y and unpromising as that is as a field for the production of the implements of political warfare, the Gazetie goes into the matter apparently with aâ€" consciousness that sometbing can be done by a great effort. We are not called upon to say whether the effort of our contemporary is a grea‘ one _ or _ not, . but it covers . a good deal of paper. _ The subject UT "aAWaA, WEDNESDAY, AUG. 11, 1874 Musimess Wanted. bouses ior sale. If such is its belief, and litical friends and their trade opponents may be consummated. The observations will be as interesting when duly recorded as those of Old Probabilitios. Mr, Rocque, who, since the nomination has been the Reform Candidate, is pursuâ€" ing his canvass with a good deal of vigor. He has the active help of a host of influâ€" ential gentlemen from the City and the Uounty, who are deoply concerned in the issue on political grounds. Aud, apart, from the unfortunate menner of his comâ€" ing out, he is making a judicious and enâ€" erpetic effort to turn the scale in his faâ€" vour. le is, as we said ina former refâ€" erence to this subject, a Reformer, and will doubtless, if elected, prove a reliable supporter of Mr. Mowat‘s administration. Taking that view _ of _ his _ charâ€" acter we are exceedingly desirous that he may be elected. OF the latter continâ€" geney we do not ourselves repeat the opinion already given in these columns ; but merely remark that Mr. Rooque‘s friends are quite sanguine as to his sucâ€" Mr. Baker‘s character, in & pplitioal respect, is perfectly well known, and we believe that he gives no uncertain sound himself* upon that point when interrogatâ€" ed. He would be, if elected, a subserâ€" "© Free Trade." _ We should hear no more of such an absurd proposition, in the first place, because it is impracticable, and in the second &ouuu there was no longer need to gull people with it. The policy of free trade is in the interâ€" est of a very large majority of the people of Canada. Whether it is sound economy to tax the majority in order that the mi nority may bave special advantages has not yet been effectually settled, however, tirmly wo may hold to the Free Trade side. An unyielding rule could not per haps be wisely applied to the case. It may be expedient that a certain licen e be permitted in | the direction of inâ€" cidental protectinn.' But that political parties in this country should ever divide as Freeâ€"Traders and Protectionists is bunâ€" kum that may serve the purpose of parâ€" tiz»n schemers harg up for weapons with which to improve their prospects of achieving office, and who have no characâ€" ter to be injured by the use of disreputa ble means. It will be the duty of every Liberal, of every elector who would have the affairs of the Province honestly administered, to turn out to morrow and vote for the Libe. ral candidate. This is not now a quéstion of choice between the candidates ï¬::nl ly ; it is not the time for grumbling at arrangemevts that aré not to our taste, Before the nomination, al\l that was time» ly and proper ; but now there is no option but to put up with things as M% been u'nnpi The prmnt time does not almit of anything but the choige between, afriend and an enemy, therefore all whose desire it is to have the ut;-: Party, succeed will conse.cberishing.tba grieyance that things‘ are not as have wished, not as they Lhoq{ll necessary to success, and will hurï¬a’with vote and influence to mï¬lh in the interests of the country the supremacy of their popular man like Mr. Baker, with sev eral weeks the start in the campaign, and with the irregular and misunaderstood manner of Mr. Rocque‘s coming out all in their favour, »nd altogether making exâ€" ceedingly great odds, they will do wisely and modestly to yield up their preten~ his wbility‘ an upholder of the fortunes of the Opposition. Should the expectaâ€" tions of Mr. Rocque and his friends be realized under the extremely disadvan, tageous ciroumstances ol his candidature, there will bardly be any ground left for tha contention that Russell is a Conserva:‘ i.ve riding.
