A Divisto® Recistriar. zJoum of Carleton, 24th Dec., 1875. A despatch from London (Eng.) informs us of the death of Augustus Mayhew, one of the oldest contributors to PuxcA, and also joint author with his brother, Horace, of " London Labour and London Poor,‘‘a work which at the time of its publication excited much attention from its graphic description of the life led by the vagrant classes of the great metropolis. Those who knew Augustus Mayhew will aâ€" ber him for the genial character m self and his writings. Ho was at ou#e time & constant writer for the Welcome Guest, a periodical published under the editorship of Mr. George Augustus Salk, and he was also one of the earliest memâ€" bers of the Junior Garrick Club. Mr. Mayhew was undoubtedly of the best type of the " Bohemian," and his dem;o will create a great blank among the conâ€" tiiDbutors to the witty columns of Punck, There are, : since the death of Mark Lemon, but few left of the original staff of that paper. i : ‘ To the Biitor of THE TIMES. * The case of Mr. Nield, at Manchester, appears to have been peculiarly hard. He has had to fight for bis seat two or three times already, and, as he has this time polied an equal number of votes with his opponent, his troubles are not yet at an end. Mr. Nield‘s private correspondence was somewhat untpuirly used against bim. le had written, it seems, to Mr. Gladâ€" stone asking for the honour of knighthood fora popular exâ€"Mayor of Manchester, and this letter had been somehow disâ€" covered, and ewmployed against its too friendly author, who was pronounced to have placed the City Council in a false position by his request. Mr. Gladstone‘s reply was & little curious, Honours, he said, were not things to be distributed according to the eminence or merit of their recipients, The plan followed was that they should be divided pretty equally by ‘rule and proportion.‘ _ Manchester has received her share for the present, and her exâ€"Mayor must, therefore, wait until the results of the ruleâ€"of three sum were more fayourable for his dignity ~It is to be hoped this rather comical mode of conferring honours will not, now it is known, cause such of our Canadian Knights as it affects, to commune thus with themselves :â€""Can it be that 1 was electâ€" ed and honoured by rule of three?"‘ We haye no desire, especiaily at this festive semson, to cloud a brow or spoil a digésâ€" tion, so we say with Shakespeare, and both to gentle and simple,â€" 5 To the first, we add (at all events, for the time being) put your honours under tBo table. THE LaTk AUGUSTUS MAYHEW yesterday‘s compromise, which would certainly have come with more apptoâ€" priateness before the nomination than after. It 5s stated there was an inforâ€" mality in the nomination itself, which may invalidate the whole proceedings, none of the candidates having demanded a poll . The: following is from an article of the London Times, of Nov. 5th, 1873, review: ing the muuicipal elections, which ha l recently taken place:â€" f nrutNTRATION oF BIRTHS, YARâ€" RIAGES AND DEATES. No douhy many people, both here and elsewhere, hare been curious to know upon what principle this, that, and the other politician had been made the recip. ient of royal honours, and was authorized to attach the magic initials, K. C. B., or the still more honourable " Bart.‘" to the designation inberited from his fathers. It is not every one knows how these matâ€" ters are managed. Accident, not emiâ€" nence, is often the motive power. Uue man has an address to carry to the foot of the throne, which could as well have been sent through the post, and hey, presâ€" to! he looms up a full fledged night,. Another, as in the case of the honest candleâ€"maker of Cheapside, who chanced to commence his Lordâ€"Msyoral career on the auspicious 9th of November, the birth day of the Prince of Wales, gets " Bart.". appended to his cognomen by & fluke,. Men are, unfortunately, not always deco: â€" ated or be knighted on account of their merit. Jones may be a much abler man than Tompkins, but Tompkins has politâ€" ical influence in Mudborough, and gets his reward. A man may have played a part in a political movement, with the inception of which he hbad little or gnoâ€" thing to do, but by a very common turn in the wheel of fortune, all the chief honours fall to his share, and his aiders, who did litte more than sweep away the cobwebs, come in for the residium of the bonours or sn ampie share of the plunder. It would be interesting to know, for examâ€" ple, the great services rendered to the State which brought roy :1 honours for zentlemen like Mr. McDougall and Mr. Langevio. They never risked their lives in the defence of their country, and it is safe to presume gained more than they lost by their conmection with politics. We have no desire to be invidious in this matter. Our object is to show that system regulates the royal gifts, or, as Mr. Gladâ€" stone has it, "the rule of three," and that those of our fellow citizens who have been honoured as knights of high degree, have uot. chawn such wonderful prizes in honour‘s lottery as they may . have imagined.
