We have known cases where, with the very best intent, fruits and conmfections have been conveyed by frie .ds to patients in hospitals, and the skrll of some of the best medical men thwarted, their energies baffied, and the life of those under treatment jeopardized. Had rules, similar to those of such insti tutions in the old world, been in existâ€" ence, and enforced, this sort of trouble could not have arisen. The very exuberance of it is alarming. The purpdse of hhlfooch was to congratulate the Poop e of both countries on the national and patriâ€" otic sentiments expressed by Mr. Forster in his Edinburgh lecture. Mr. Forster‘s declarations are quoted as an evidence of a « practical renunciation" of the views of "" some of that school of British politicians to which the right honourable ?.nt.lemm belongs." Those declarations have been reâ€"assuring to the Canadian ille, as convincing them that even tfl:o iberal mony amoug the iticians as to the necessity of careful reg.rdin’ and culâ€" tivating the popu feeling of affection aud reverence for Great Britain. â€" The ouly misgiving we can have on reading ing,. ‘The only quarrel between the two Canalian u]:utiu would seem to be as to which is the real loyal and imperial party, There never was, perhaps, at any previous time in Canndi.mLhi-tM so complete a harâ€" meal enc " so far &s the English public are con cerned, there was no reassurance needed. No considerable numler of persons in this country had the slightest fear that England would suffer herself to be talked out of her attachment to her Colonies. But it is quite possible that in Canada there may have been some misunderâ€" standing as to En(g‘hnd’s feeling. Sharp expressions of individual opinion often make themselves heard across the oceaun, when the murmur of quiet national accord fails to travel equally fast, Mr. Foster‘s speech was therefore probably reassuring to Canada, and certainly Mr. Mackensie‘s comments on it are welcome and gratify= ing to England. | The article in the Standard is very lengthy, and from it we extract the folâ€" lowing :â€"*"On comparing the utterances of the two Canadian statesmen (Mr. Macâ€" kenzie and Sir John Macdonald) it will be gratifying to those who, like ourâ€" selves, find the chief interest of Canadian politics to lie in abserving the growth of the Imperial settlement, and whose sympathies with one local party or the other are mainly determined by its greater or less tendency to be faithful to the ‘Crown â€" ani the British union, to perceive that they both appear to be equally anxious to take crocm. with the ple for a firm and loyal adherence to ger:n Britain. It is hardly possible to decide which is the more profuse, the Prime Minister or the leader of the Opposition, in his proâ€" {essions of attachment to the Old Country. Conservative and Liberal agree at least on this one point of their political faith that both are anxious to be helJ above suspicion on this score The competition is so keen between them _ as to | remove. all possible doubt as to the disposition of the people yhoceâ€g:)od will the rive1 leaders are courtâ€" The News says :â€"Mr. Mackenzie, the Prime Minister of the Dominien of Caâ€" nada, has made a speech of some import ance to the ‘public of this country, as well as to that which he was more immeâ€" diately addressing. The text of his speech was the address delivered by Mr. Forster in Edinburgh, and its object was to congratulate Cavadians and Englishâ€" men alike on the cordial anxiety for a perpetual connection between England and the Colonies which that address disâ€" layed. We do not know whether Mr. g{aekenzie was quite accurate in describâ€" ing Mr. Forster‘s speech as a " practical renunciation on their behalt" of certain views which ‘ some of that school of Briâ€" tish politicians to which the right honourable gentleman belongs‘‘ were at â€" one time _ supposed to . enterâ€" rtain. We _ doubt _ whether _ Mr. Forster believed himself to be delivering & renunciation of any views on behalf of any section of the futy to which he beâ€" longs, for the simple reason that no such views ever formed a portion of the creed of the party. The great majority, of Liâ€" berals always he‘d the views witl:.Ll:prd to the Colonies which Mr. Forster exâ€" pressed at Edinburgh. No other views on the l:rl:iect were ever authoritatively put forward or accepted as identical with the principles of Liberalism, or having any necessagy connection with them. There were members of the party who individually entertained on that and on various other subjects peculiar and exâ€" treme opinions, which no leader of the party was likely to feel himself called upon to renounce. With what Mr. | Forster said and with what Mr. Mackenzie #a d about it, the vast majority of Liberals and of Englishmen on all sides of the political field would thoroughly agree today.
