A friendly place to visit Jump aboard for a tour of Montmorency by Danny Asselin Not many people believe the many opportunities that a camera can open to a person. This was the case last Saturday as I was led on a tour of the Canadian Coast Guard ship, the Mont- morency. While at the Midland town docks, looking for interesting pictures for this paper, I happened to look up and saw aman hanging out a porthole on what had appeared to be a deserted ship. We had a conversation about different types of cameras when suddenly the sailor, Bob Lamonde, asked me if I would like to come aboard for a tour, to take some pictures from the bridge Pro race For the third straight year, the World Pro Ski Tour will pit top racers in thrilling side by side competition at Collingwood's Blue Moun- tain Ski Resort on January 25 and 26. This year's classic, sponsored by Benson and Hedges, will offer a total prize purse of $30,000. The Blue Mountain Classic, seventh race on the shi Always one to jump quickly at an opportunity, I said "Well, uh....I think so." I climbed up_ the gangplank but couldn't find my way into the ship and had to wait for Bob to come onto the deck to get me. We toured the crew's quarters, the kitchens, the dining rooms and_ recreation facilities -- all impressive with their cleanliness and similarity to those of a cruise vessel. He then led me down a grey, steep, well-lighted stairway to the engine room and its two diesel engines. I had to agree with Bob through my ski jacket, turtleneck sweater and two undershirts, that yes, this was the hottest part of the 16 event tour, will feature for the first time an Ontario team of pro racers, spon- sored by the host resort. Nicknamed "The Blue Mountain Boys", Doug Woodcock, Paul Carson, Damian Lee, Lutz Brode and Derek Robbins will try to attain the major share of honors on their home turf. They will face gigantic competition in the names of i Well done ma'am Eight-year-old Susanne Foster, who lives at Mountainview, took first place in the girls under 10 class at last Sunday's cross-country trials at Mountainview Ski hills near Midland. Above, she gets an affectionate rub on the neck from Rolf Haig, who himself placed second in the over 45 age group. Mr. and Mrs. Gratrix celebrate 50 years Congratulations are ex- tended to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gratrix of R.R.1, Waubaushene, on the oc- casion of their 50th wedding anniversary. The celebration was quiet, with a few friends, due to the fact that Mr. Gratrix had just returned from a stay in the hospital. Mrs. Gratrix is the former May Botting of Concession 13, Tay Township, and at- tended public school in Coldwater. Walter Gratrix was born in Medonte and attended Rosemount School. Later he moved to Detroit, but returned at Christmas time in 1924 to be married. He took his bride back to Detroit where they lived for a number of years. They have been living at their present address for approximately 20 years. Mr. and Mrs. Gratrix have one daughter, Marilyn, (Mrs. Bill Duncliff) of Acton, Ontario. Page 18, Wednesday, January 8, 1975 We finally arrived at the bridge. As I peeled off my ski jacket and started to take pictures, I found Bob to be not only a pleasant, rotund man but an opinionated one as well. On spending Christmas _ aboard ship: "It's not all that bad, but you do miss home"'. On Midland and its people, the native Montrealer said: "This is a really great place to visit. Midland has everything, and the people are very nice to invite aboard to break the boredom. "Midland is really going to be some great place in the future". _ With those words still fresh in my mind, I packed up my at Collingwood Jean-Claude Killy, current series leader Henri Duvillard, Spider Sabich and last season's top finisher at Blue Mountain, Hugo Nindl. Since the series began five years ago, Canadians have not fared very well against their © European and American counterparts. Woodcock, finishing 16th in the total standings last year, has proven himself the top Canadian on the tour. shook his hand, thanked him for his kindness and left. And I would suggest that anyone with an interest in ships visit the Montmorency gear, before she leaves for Collingwood and winter layup in the middle of January. And carry a camera -- even if you don't know how to use it.
