IS COMING Fite 28 A novel by the author of PANDEMIC by Shirley Whittington Not all Canadian writers dedicate themselves to survival in a cold climate, and the search for oa national identity. John Mills, John Ballem and Charles Templeton, for instance, have all recently whipped up exciting action novels of the thriller genre. Vancouver's Tom Ardies, an ex-newspaperman and public relations consultant has written four fast-paced novels, sparked with deadly humour and turning on themes as timely as the headlines of a _ daily newspaper. In This Suitcase is Going to Explage, super-agent Charlie Sparrow defuses a bunch' of conspirators who have planted nuclear bombs in every major city. Pandemic deals with a billionaire recluse who tries to "save" the world by destroying most of mankind. Once again, Sparrow flies to the rescue. In Their Man in the White House, the President is seriously ill. Vice- presidential hopefuls die mysteriously and Sparrow unravels what appears to be a Communist plot to put a Red man in the White House. Kosygin is Coming is a 1974 Ardies offering. Here the Sparrow has apparently fallen. This time the hero is an irreverent corporal, Timothy Shaver, on suspension from the RCMP for punching his boss in the nose. He is assigned to kidnap an anti-Russian CIA type for the duration of Premier Kosygin's visit to Canada. The story begins in the Stump Club, an association of war amputees, and travels through flats and rooming houses in Vancouver's seedier districts. In '74 vogue, there are a couple of harrowing scenes based on automobile misadventures. The plot, which oc- casionally resembles Mad Magazine's Spy vs Coun- terspy erupts with surprises and ends in a noisy climax of falling bodies and falling helicopters. Her Shaver is unlike the first-person Charlie Sparrow of the earlier novels - less of Spillane and more of Peter Falk. He stalks his prey, only tomfind that he has already been kidnapped. He has troubles with his chick (a big Polish beauty, only slightly used). He makes a daring escape through a skylight and finds himself facing a gun muzzle. He handles the advanced state of inebriation. And he has an unsettling habit of resorting to puns at tense moments. Says he to a would-be assassin whom he has backed up against the railing of a bridge. 'This is your last chance. Fink, or swim." All the characters in the book are characters indeed. Petapiece, his grimy un- dercover boss, mooches drinks and smokes from him, and gives him no moral support at all. Henke, the propsective kidnapee is a bald sex pervert. The girl friend, Bogna, "had never been a beauty, but her age permitted that pretense now."' The hired killer from Detroit is a "dear little perfumed darling with a pocketbook stuffed with cash." It's a good story, well told with energy and dash. If you like thrillers, you'll like Kosygin is Coming. Doubleday and Co. 207 pages.
