The body should be centred between the skis, with a slight bend forward at the ankles and knees. To turn, simply apply steering action to the outside or new downhill ski, turning or pivoting into the turn. Once this has been ac- complished, begin to steer in the opposite direction. To stop, increase the plow by pushing the tails of the skis out, thus increasing the edging power. Repeating the snowplow turn will improve the steering action, stability and control of the skis. Now you can avoid other skiers, lift towers and trees. At this point, you should Start using the ski lifts on the more gentle slops. Advise the lift attendant you will need assistance and he will be most pleased to help. Ski Jargon Many people do not quite understand the true meaning of ski reports. Poor skiing is when there are many bare spots and only a few inches of snow on the slopes. Fair conditions result when there is more snow and fewer bare patches. Good skiing is what we all hope for. There are no bare spots and there is a good base with new snow. Mogols are bumps on the hill which often pose dif- ficulties for inexperienced skiers but are a.challenge for the advanced and expert skiers. The fall line is an imaginary line, running down the hill. Traversing is a maneouver where the skis are placed parallel and diagonally across the hill. You then ski from one side of the slop to the other. A sitz- mark is created when someone falls, leaving an indentation in the snow. This is a hazard because someone may catch a ski tip and have a bad fall, possibly resulting in injury. Always fill in sitzmarks. Next week, I'll discuss advanced skiing for experts. Nursery R.R.
