Teer ee ee a Citizen sports best | be Sports Talking by Tom Shields From Russia with bad news Another Canadian-Russian hockey series has come to an end, this time involving Barrie Midgets trip to the USSR. Barrie won one game, lost two, and tied two, which isn't too bad considering their treatment behind the Iron Curtain. According to reports we received here, from Barrie and our press, the tournament was just a pile of garbage. It was improperly run and the Barrie youngsters were treated badly in Moscow. Other reports stated that the Soviet teen-agers were going to win at any cost, thus the Barrie boys had to suffer through five games of terrible refereeing. I think by now, that we have learned our lesson, and we should concentrate more on playing in North America, and using North American rules and standards, and of course refereeing. Although the Soviets have great hockey teams, all other aspects in their hockey world are lower than an earthworm's tummy in the mud. I guess I had better change the subject, or I will be the subject of a KGB hunt. Flyers still kicking Although the Midland Flyers have been out of the Junior "B" playoffs for amost a month, they are still kicking. In fact, the Flyers will be holding a try-out camp at the Penetanguishene Arena in early April for local boys who might want to take a crack at Junior "B" action next season. This camp will be for boys from our area, from Base Borden and Beaverton district. The Flyers are quite high on Brian Pilon and a few other players from this season's Silver Stick champion midget team. Baseball is already underway down south and once again the Montreal Expos seem to be one of the hottest items on the Grapefruit circuit. However, they just never seem to be able to follow through in the regular season. The Expos are shooting for a speedy ball team this season with good defence. So far, they are showing nothing but hitting power down south. Regular season gets underway in four weeks. Indians will return On the local scene, the Midland Indians will be once again entering the Ontario Baseball Association and South Simcoe League, but attention had focussed on the Barrie entry. Former Orillia player, Nick Ownes is running this club and is gunning for a Senior "A"' team. In doing - this, he is trying to get some of the Orillia and Penetanguishene-Midland area players down to Barrie. But the new rules will prevent this from hap- pening as the teams will not be classified by the OBA committee until late in July. In other words, they study the team's performance, then rate them in as either Senjor or Intermediate class, then grade them into © e #&) BC, or D. So players will not be able to jump are "5 'the league unless approved by the Ontario Baseball Commission. Back to hockey Back to the unpredictable world of hockey to end off this week's column. First of all, Perrault's third goal on Sunday night when the Sabres beat the Leafs 11-2, was one of the nicest goals that I have seen in the past five years. The Sabres humiliated the Leafs, and brought them back to reality after their nine game undefeated string. As it now stands, the Leafs will meet Los Angeles in the first round. Other first round match- ups will have Boston meeting St. Louis, Pittsburgh battling the Chicago Black Hawks and the New Yorkers clashing headon - the Rangers and the Islanders. These playoffs will all be a best of three affair getting underway on April 8th. Again I em- phasize that this will happen if the standings and points stay in the same structure as they are now. Bobby Orr should win the scoring championship, but the real battle for individual honours is for the Vezina trophy, between Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Now that Parent is healthy, I will go with him to win the goalies' award even though he is down by three goals at the present time. Losers sometimes smile... Losers can be winners or at least they can crack winning smiles. The members of the worst rink at the Annual Legion Bonspiel in Penetanguishene last Saturday were not afraid to be photographed. IGA finished in last place at the end of the regular hockey league schedule but in the playoffs the grocery boys have been an entirely different team. Now, thanks to John Bell's overtime goal at the 7:25 mark of the first overtime period IGA is in the com- fortable position of having a week off while they wait to see who emerges as the winner of the Ken's Esso- Emery's Electric series. IGA won the game 5-4. Bell's goal knocked a determined Penetanguis- hene Marine team out of the playoffs, IGA took Marine in two straight games in the best two-out-of-three semi- final series. Despite losing in two straight games Penetanguishene Marine played outstanding hockey against IGA. Marine lost the Paul Dion - opening game of the series 2- 1. In the second game of the series on Sunday, Marine fell behind 3-0 but three straight third period goals by Paul Dion enabled Marine to tie the game up. Larry Leroux, the league's second highest point getter during the regular season, capped a fantastic third period comeback by rifling the puck over the right shoulder of IGA's goaltender Pete Wilson with 5:32 left in regular play. At that point in the game it looked like Marine would manage to force a third and deciding game the following week but Ted Devillers just managed to tuck the puck over the line in a mad scramble in front of the Marine net. Devillers' goal, his second of the game for IGA, tied the match at 4-4 and set the stage for John Bell's goal in overtime play. Marine players protested Devillers' game tying goal but the referee ruled that the puck had just crossed the line. IGA jumped into a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Jerry Gignac and Brian Merkley. Until the start of the third period IGA dominated play but with a three goal lead the grocery boys went into a bit of a defensive shell. That's when Paul Dion ripped in three straight goals to tie the game up. Before IGA came out of its trance Larry Leroux had pushed Marine into a 4-3 lead. Devillers' goal with 3:32 Here are the regular remaining in the third period tied the score and at 7:25 of the first overtime period John Bell ended the season for Penetanguishene Marine. IGA should be stronger in the final playoff series. Their offensive leader and the league's top point getter, Ken Edgar, missed this week's game because of an injured knee. He'll be ready for the finals. Regular season league champions, Ken's Esso, blanked Emery's Electric 3- 0 to even the other best-of- three semi-final series at one game apiece.
