Lunch and Refreshments. - The bookworm by Shirley Whittington The Bookworm's diet this week is a mixed one -- threé books which have little in common except that they've all béen around for a while, and each is sought after for its own reasons. Jaws by Peter Benchley seems to be the current paperback favourtie. It's a fast moving novel about a Long Island resort town where the economy depends on the summer tourist trade. When a giant killer shark inexplicably arrives offshore and begins to dine on local swimmers, business begins to look bad. The mayor, who is also the local real estate en- trepreneur, pressures the chief of police to keep the beaches open. It develops that he's tied up with a different kind of killer -- a loan shark -- and falling real estate values spell his ruin. Benchley takes us through Jaws" --a current paperback favourite the mandatory illicit love affair, some municipal machinations and the soul- searching of an honest police chief who really believes his mandate is to protect the people of his community. The shark hunt in the closing pages of the book is good reading, and a lot more compelling than Moby Dick. The dialogue is particularly authentic, and Benchley obviously knows a lot about people, and about sharks. Jaws is to be made into a movie, and that will surely pose some interesting challenges for the special effects people. It's not likely that anyone will ever make a movie out of Osborne's Midland and Her Pioneers, but the miracle is that the book is again in print, and very handsomely too. Mick Mika of Belleville's Mike Press specializes in local history. When he came to Midland and discovered the tattered state of the remaining copy of Midland Student pres. elected Communication arts student Ian Tudor has been elected President of the Students' Adminstrative Council at Georgian College in Barrie, succeeding Alice Beauchamp of Midland. Being president isn't exactly a new experience for the 21-year-old. While in Grade 13 at Collingwood Collegiate Institute, Ian served as Naturalists meet Thurs. The Midland-Penetang- uishene Field Naturalist Club will meet at 8 p.m. at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre on Thursday, April 17. Our guest speaker, Roger Chittenden ° will show coloured slides on "'A River. Through the Seasons", which features the little river which runs through Creek Park in Wilket Toronto. THEATRE © Wed. Using photographic replate, Mika has produced a clean easily readable edition. The collection of reminiscences, newspaper stories and interviews with early Midlanders is in- terspersed with some fascinating old photgraphs. It is not indexed, a short- coming which is made up for by Osborne's_ chatty, sometimes flowery style. "No longer is it see Naples and die," enthuses the writer. 'The more satisfying and healthful way is to see Midland and live."' His book will help you to see Midland in a new and delightful light. Finally, there's Some Camel Some Needle... by Arnold Edinborough, who is a former editor and publisher of Saturday Night Magazine, and a frequent columnist in the Financial Post and the Canadian Churchman. His book is a warm and lucid celebration of life in 'the Christian (specifically Anglican) tradition. Edinborough says that the a) STARTS WEDNESDAY THRU TUESDAY. Christian calendar, which is the basis for the Anglican church year has given his life a rhythm and purpose which he can find in no other mechanism. It has also given him a deep sense of human continuity and a richer appreciation of painting, music and books. The book is written, ap- propriately, in diary form and is filled with anecdote, reflection and good humour. At the close of a piece on obfuscating _ theological writing, Edinborough quotes a modern translation of St. Paul: "Be careful that nobody spoils your faith, through intellectualism or high sounding nonsense." Some Camel, Some Needle is intellectual, to be sure, but high sounding nonsense it is not. Reading it will not destroy your faith. It will enrich it.
