Call Contact 526-9333 Hours: 9a.m. to 9 p.m. except : Saturdays and Holidays Pe = eo) "Listen and Love" Telecare is an international Christian organization. Its purpose is to respond to human need through a telephone listening service. It is a distress line open to anyone with trained professional and lay counsellors. Telecare is a part of Lifeline International, whose conference takes place at Disneyland California next year. Our closest center is Barrie which hosted Telecare's first national conference last weekend. Rev. Carl Bull of Barrie was named national director of this service. Opened by the minister of Culture and Recreation, the Honourable Robert Welch, a deep sense of caring permeated the conference, interjected by hilarious humour shared by all. "Love and Listen'"' seemed to sum up the purpose of Telecare. An important realism stressed in the Creative Listening seminar was that "Caring comes from within, you cannot be trained to care". Workshops dealt with Marriage Enrichment, Recognizing and Handling Spiritual Problems, Creative Listening, Problem side-stepped-person found, and who am I (in spite of me). All sessions were very meaningful to those who work with people. The most northern Canadian Center attending was Thompson Manitoba. Telecare's American counterpart is called Contact Teleministry with 60 centers and growing ata rate of one each month. Their national director attended from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Rev. D. Bruce McDougall was founder of Telecare Canada in Sudbury 10 years ago and is now director of Faith at Work Canada. His banquet address was inspiring, humorous and totally enjoyable. The Rev. David Mainse director and host of the Sunday morning TV program Crossroads, gave a message of appreciation and support of the service of Telecare. Rev. Bill Lamb, Executive of Telecare, a friend from my Kingston Ontario days, relates easily and warmly to people and particularly to his Telecare family assembled this weekend, of which he is extremely proud. The most real and touching moments of the weekend came from several delegates who related sincerely, personal experiences of their own growth through the challenge of honestly relating to people in distress. Base Borden provided a film on Human Relationships with Dr. Tom Skinner, a fine down-to-earth presentation of "why prejudice and how to overcome it." He spoke often of famous sports teams with which he works in the area of team work and human relationships, the Miami Dolphins, Boston Red Socks etc. "How people relate to each other decides how the job gets done." It was an enriching experience for me because although Contact here is multi-facited in its service, our purpose in many ways has many parallels to Telecare. The fantastic humour, spirit, lack of pressure, the ex- cellent presentations, the feeling of oneness, gave everyone a feeling of real purpose and great encouragement which/ should continue as a strength for those who work with people for a long time. ry, A big contribution After four years of hard work, tne students at Victoria Harbour Public School finally made it!
