The Lions' mini-bikers whooped it up on King Street during Saturday afternoon's lavish parade before a large crowd of Midland and area residents. Clowns, a four-wheel and two- driver Austin mini, pipe bands, majorettes, and floats added Just tootin' around to the festivities on King Street for the District A-12 Lions parade. Between 600 and 800 district Lions roared into Midland on the weekend for their annual conference. Victoria Harbour girl jailed for 35 days A 21-year-old Victoria Harbour girl was jailed for 35 days and placed on probation for 12 months after she pleaded guilty in Penetanguishene provincial court last Thursday to trafficking in a controlled drug -- but before the sen- tencing, her lawyer took strong exception to the way the charge had been laid. The girl was the com- plainant in a rape case held recently before the Ontario Supreme Court in Barrie, and her lawyer, Drummond Peet, claimed that he '"'took great exception to the way the (drug) charge was laid and the way evidence was obtained.." The accused man was not convicted of raping the girl, but according to Peet, the "evidence of her in- volvement with drugs came out at the preliminary hearing (of the rape case)" and that OPP officers subsequently "had her in Tiny Township deputy-reeve elected as rep Tiny Township deputy- reeve Hilda Sibthorpe has been elected as the Barrie zone representative to the board of the Ontario Municipal Recreation Association. In an interview last week, Mrs. Sibthorpe -- who defeated incumbent Howard Grier in last fall's municipal elections -- said she was nominated from Simcoe County Council. Her zone will include the counties of Simcoe, Peel, Halton and York, and she said she is '"'kind of pleased -- it brings it (the position) to the north end" of the area. The association represents recreation people and their municipal, county and regional organizations from across the province. "At the same office which was investigating her complaint," he charged, "and proceeding with it," they investigated the drug incident. "Whatever happened to solicitor-client privilege? Surely the complainant can put some trust in the Crown -- this is not the ad- ministration of justice.." He said the girl is "not the normal trafficker' and that she was pleading guilty for three reasons: that she had committed the offence -- of selling LSD to the man later charged with rape; that she had just gone through a "very traumatic trial and didn't want to go through another one"; and that the Crown attorney's office had advised her to plead guilty. He then called the girl's mother and a Don Mills man as character references, claiming she had never been involved with drugs before the incident took place. The Don Mills man had employed her for 18 months as a baby sitter until roughly two years ago, and with his wife pregnant plans, he told the court, to do so again. Federal prosecutor Douglas Haig of Midland, arguing for a jail term before presiding Judge L.T. Montgomery, spoke of the "element of deterrent' involved, adding "it is essential that it be known in this area that if people are trafficking..they should be dealt with relatively severely." In sentencing the girl, the judge noted that incidents of a suspended sentence for trafficking "are rare in- deed"', and that the court had to "bear in mind that drugs are an insidious thing."' He claimed that in such cases "the rehabilitation of the accused is secondary"' to the protection of society. Processing building permits Brian Hopkins, deputy- clerk of Tay Township and secretary to the Tay plan- ning board reports that applications for amend- ments to the ministerial zoning order placed on the township earlier this year are very slow in being processed. When Donald Irvine, Ontario Minister of Housing met with the Township Council on April 8 he told them that if they had any applications for building permits all they had to do was send them to Queen's Park and they would be processed there. Hopkins, however, pointed out that along with each permit application would have to go an application to amend the order. To illustrate how long this would take, he said that they had sent in the first ap- plications for amendments to the zoning order shortly after the order was imposed on February 14. They still don't have them back. So his conclusion was that such Staffphoto applications would take TRAVEL AGENT WANTED Public inquiry has indicated an excellent op- portunity for a fully serviced travel agency in Bayfield Mall.
