| } , Institute of the Blind to hold annual county picnic on June 25 A regular meeting of the Simcoe County ad- visory board of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, presided over by chair- man Jack Buie of Stayner, was held on d peeing evening, May 71. Present were fourteen members __ representing the district ad- ministrator's office and the local committees of Barrie, Collingwood, Midland and Orillia. Following the chair- man's opening remarks and the treasurer's report for the five-month period ending May 20, a representative of each of the four committees gave a report of their respective activities since last November. Each of these reports told of special seasonal social activities last December for blind clients and of other significant local projects. Of immediate interest was an item from the report of the Collingwood area committee con- cerning the annual picnic for the blind of the county, an event which will take place on June 25 at the community centre in Stayner under the auspices of the Lions Club of that community. Jack Clements, district administrator for CNIB, reported concerning some recent activities in connection with his work. Since last November, 25 new cases of blindness have been investigated and nine of these concern people who are diabetic. 'Tt was revealed that with the exception of advanced age, diabetes is now the chief cause of blindness, and that constant dif- ficulties are encountered by blind diabetics who want job placement. It was stated that the Barrie lodge of the Independent Order of Foresters recently donated a canoe for use at the Lake Joseph summer camp for the blind. Clements gave the representatives dupli- cated material on 'elec- tronic travel aids for the blind, on tape recordings of books and on the proposed 1975-76 budget for the Simcoe County work of the CNIB. i] HASH BROWN CARNATION, FROZEN POTATOES 21.00 Action Priced! More than 87 per cent of the income came from county individuals, businesses and organizations through their donations to CNIB campaigns or a share of United Appeals. The provincial government Real Savings here during A&P's BIG DOLLAR SALE! grant provided slightly more than nine per cent of the total, while the remainder came from a few municipal grants with that of the county council being the most substantial. While the exact total required for the coming year cannot be deter- mined now it is evident that rising costs for everything and a larger number of blind clients to be served will necessitate substantially higher expenditures. Where does student indifference to correct spelling begin? Certainly not in elementary school, where spell-offs were held to determine which student should appear at the contest. Electronic equipment was used to project the written word above the students' so that the audience could commiserate or be elated as the words appeared. It proved to be an in- teresting evening and a very fitting manner for Kitchikewana Chapter IODE to observe the 75th anniversary of IODE in Canada, since the three main concerns of the order is education Plans for this were discussed during the May meeting held at the home of Mrs, James. Tully Suitably engraved trophies were decided upon for the winners, and gold pens for all par- ticipants. Silver dollars were unobtainable and Olympic eoins prohibitive Some of the proceeds from the very successful "Rummage and Things" went in to the purchase of the above. The regent, Mrs. T.C. Luke, wishes to thank all those who gave their time and those who came in such large numbers The 75th Anniversary Rose Program has been brought to a close--the 75,000 bushes sold exhausted the supply. At this writing roses ordered in this area have not been delivered yet The idea is that they should arrive at the right time for planting so should be along any time now...there have been acknowledgements from Victoria and Florida, two places usually warmer than Midland in May! A special thank you to all who purchased them...in this way they showed their interest in the National Chapter's 75th Anniversary program "Concern for Children."' Homemakers service to begin June 1 When the Huronia Branch was formed only a few months ago, it was stated that the first priority would be the starting of a local Homemakers Service. The Board of Directors of the Huronia Branch are pleased to state that on June 1 this will have been accomplished. The Branch has hired Isobel Jones as super- visor of the Homemakers Service. Mrs. Jones will work, for the time being, from her home and will start recruiting and training homemakers on June 2. It is expected that as the demand increases, more trained homemakers will be available. 'Wednesday, May 28, 1975, Page 7
