It is the film version of a best-selling novel by Max Ehrlich called "The Rein- carnation of Peter Proud"'. Michael Sarrazin portrays the title character, a young college teacher whose routine life is suddenly shattered by a plague of. recurring nightmares and disturbing visions. He dreams ot the same persons and places in dream after dream, and they are people he doesn't know and places he is sure he has never seen. There are no out- standing performances in "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud'; on the other hand, all of the roles are adequately played. The cast consists mainly of unknowns, with the exception of Montreal- born actor Michael Sarrazin (last seen as Streisand's harried husband in "For Pete's Sake'); Jennifer O'Neill (the girl from "Summer of 42'); and Margot Kidder (another Canadian performer; she was one of the victims in last year's 'Black Christmas" and recently co-starred with Robert Redford in "The Great Waldo Pepper".) Likewise the direction by J. Lee Thompson is adequate though unin- spired. His former directed films range from Very Good ("The Guns of Navarone"' and "Cape Fear") to Mediocre ("I Aim At the Stars') to downright Terrible (the 1969 WES wie "MacKenna's Gold"). I would rate Thompson's new film as one of his better works, though not his best. I found "The Rein- carnation of Peter Proud" to be entertaining and generally interesting, rather than thoroughly engrossing and riveting, which it might have been had it been directed by a more skilled and imaginative director. Neverthelesss, the movie is worth seeing since the subject matter is unusual. Reincarnation as' serious subject as seldom.been tackled by the cinema; jit generally crops up only in horror movies like "The Mummy" or in comedies such as "Here Comes Mr. Jordan'. '"'The Rein- carnation of Peter Proud" is hardly the final word which could be said on the subject of rein- carnation, but it is one of the first serious words to be said on it in films.
