As of March 1, all processor- prepacked consumer packages of meat and other perishable food products began carrying a "Best Before" date. If you found in the meat counter the notation "Best before Mr 31" on a package, you would regard this as the date for "durable life" of the product. The month, is abbreviated to two let- ters. March will be listed as Mr, April as Al and June as Jn, etc. It is important to un- 'derstand what "durable life" represents. It simply means that it is the date up to which the product can be expected to retain, without appreciable deterioration, its normal wholesomeness, _ palat- ability, nutritional value or any other qualities claimed for it by the processor. But this is March promises to be a busier than usual month The East Simcoe D.H.1. Association has scheduled a meeting on milking equipment and pipelines in conjunction with a tour to the Phelpston farms of Gerry Moran and Albert Van- casteren. Agricultural Engineer George Garland will be the guest speaker. The date'for this Or: will be annowmced shortly. > Friday, 'April 2nd -- Holstein Club Banquet and Dance at the Legion Hall in Barrie. 4-H clubs are holding organizational meetings f) C.N.E. Competition g) 4-H Achievement Days at Local Fall Fairs h) 4-H Awards Banquet You will also be involved with club planning and organization of meetings, dates, programs, parents' nights, committee work, displays at fairs, parade floats, and any other activities you may wish to do as a 4-H Agricultural Club. Judging -- You may have the opportunity to.participate in many intercounty, regional and_ provincial activities. If you are thinking of joining as a new member, contact the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office in Elmvale, and come out to the organizational meeting in your com- munity. Consumers to see new "Best Before" label | providing the product has been shipped and stored under continuous, adequate _ refrigeration. It does not mean that the product cannot or should not be used after the date shown. Nor does it mean that up to that date, regardless of the way the product has been kept and stored before or after purchase, there is complete assurance of quality and freshness. If the '"'Best Before" date is close at hand, the package should be con- sumed in the near future, especially when opened. The 'durable life" of unopened packages can be: extended by im- mediate freezing. For the next year meat, poultry and fish products packaged and sold in stores by retailers will carry a packaging date rather than a "durable life' date. But placards at point of sale will indicate for each type of such in- store packaged products, what durable life can be expected. Consumers can now continue to comparison shop, using the date as an extra check on freshness TLE OO jomes come}; complete with shag carpet, drapes, plumbing,} ; eating-and electrical fixtures and many other|4 tandard features.
