Theres just one word for beer. Buffalo goalie MMHA guest tonight Al Smith, goalie with the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League, will be the guest at the Midland minor hockey annual banquet at the Midland arena tonight. Approximately 1200 players and parents, coaches and managers are expected to cram the arena gardens for the annual event. MC Tom Shields will be directing questions at the guest speaker and will pass on the audience's queries to the NHLer. Because no one in the area could accommodate the large group, no dinner will be served. But the mothers' auxiliary has used the extra money on prizes for the boys, and refreshments will be served. There will be no. ad- mission charge for fathers this year. & Sam Sacco a "We cater to car care' Authorized Polyglaze Application Center Interior Shampooing Engine Cleaning -- Painting Vinyl! roofs and interiors restored Vinyl Top Special $75.00 for Most Cars REPLACE DAMAGED TOPS OR RUSTED TOPS - $95.00 PADDED TOPS--- One Year Guarantee on Vinyl Tops BODY INSTALLED- MIDLAND CUSTOM CAR CLEANING 76) Vinden Street, Midland (Next fo the Tri-Super Laundromat) 526-4473 o-=e=-- $115.00 SIDE MOLDING $25.00 One Year Guarantee Wet Weather Special CAR WASH Includes interior and exterior cleaning, rentigenee, $00 cleaned (inside and out) Victory is swee Receiving their awards at the YMCA Bowling Banquet Monday evening, April 26th are Robbie Richardson, captain of the winning team and Fred Leitch winner of the boys High double, pose to have their picture taken. Fin, Fur, and Feather by Bryan Berriault Hoards of fishermen converged on the rivers on the 24th of April. Fires and flashlights at four in the morning lit the skies along the river banks of most rivers. As for the fish, they were spooked and very few had an inkling to bite any bait no matter how well it was put forth. The Coldwater, North and Sturgeon rivers gave up very few in the morning. But as the day went on, either the bank trampers stopped or the rainbows became accustomed to the noise and few fish were taken. Low clear water did not help the situation any. Saturday evening my old fishing buddy George Mills and myself did take five fish. Mepps out produced anything else we tried with spawn bags coming second. A few other fishermen took fish on the lowly worm. With most rivers so low, eggs drifted without any weights gave best results but made for fast drifting. The warm weather has given us the best season for spawning rainbows. All females taken were completely spawned out which should make big runs of fish for the future. Owen Sound, Meaford and Thornbury should have good bay fishing for another month or so according to some experts in the Ministry. Fish now leaving the rivers should hit the bay and start feeding. EGB's and Blanchard spoons have been successful. With the walleye moving back out into the bay after spawning, we should start picking walleye from Sturgeon Bay. Some have already been taken. Rapalas Benos and Filatfish trolled as slowly as possible give a much better chance for success. Since walleye are a bottom dweller it's a must to get as close as possible to all the snags at the bottom. For those that spend more time trying to retrieve a lure from the bottom try using a three way swivel with the lure tied to one, the weight (bell sinker) to the other, and the main line to the last. On the line holding the weight try an elastic or nick the line so if you do get snagged chances are you will lose the weight not a three dollar lure. Rapalas work better when attached directly to a piece of Mono. A twenty or thirty pound test line comes in hand for leader material in this respect. With the early spawning season most fish will be returning to their favourite haunts in the near future. John Hawke of Midland found this out when he hooked onto a Pike in Georgian Bay. The pike tipped the scales at 18 lbs. 8 oz. a prize for any fisherman. John was using a sparkplug for a weight and a pop tart for bait. Well that's what Don LeClair was told. May 8th marks the opening sanctuaries for trout and inland waters for Walleye and Pike. This means inland of Georgian Bay pike and walleye will be fair game in such rivers as the Wye River outside Midland, Swift Rapids, Port Severn and the Big Chute for walleye. Worms, minnow, rapalas, mepps flatfish, swim wizz will all serve the purpose as bait for such fish. Mike Brammell has been giving his rod a real workout lately. The walleye have been falling prey to Mike over the last little while at Port Severn on the bay side of the bridge. Mike's largest has been a whopping pickerel just under 16 lbs. Mike says the shoulder to shoulder fishing doesn't bother him as long as he can take a few fish. yy, Bulls drop exhibition game r When it's your move Call 526-8282 Midland's rugger Bulls dropped their season opening exhibition game by a tight 16-12 score to Mississauga Crusaders at Sheridan College in Mississauga over the weekend.
