He has published seven volumes of poetry, the latest of which is "A Knight In Dried Plums," published last year. Sharing the platform with McFadden will be Mrs. Helen Weinzweig, a short story writer and author of the ex- perimental novel "Passing Ceremony.' Opening night, Hart- man sold 20 of the 44 paintings on display, and the Niblocks ran out of little red stars. Almost 200 people at- tended the festive opening on Friday night, and viewed the collection which takes up the entire gallery space, upstairs and downstairs. Hartman, an MSS and McMaster graduate, has been painting in the Georgian Bay Islands and at North Bay for the past two years and his work reflects his affection for forest, water, and brooding skies. He has a sense of mission about Canadian landscape painting. 'We have inherited a European tradition," he says, '"'but our North American world is dif- ferent. The space is different, and this goes on into colour. I hope to _watercolour, | arrive at some un- derstanding of that unique kind of space." Hartman's perceptions of the Canadian scene are rendered in a pleasing variety of ways. Two hazily sunlit canvasses pay homage to Joseph Turner, a nineteenth Century English painter whom Hartman admires. In other paintings, he used a pastel overlay on which produced an almost chalky texture. There were dream-like traceries of branches, monochromatic studies of woodlands and oils in shimmering sunlit colours. Other oils were more boldly executed, in sombre brooding colours. There are great changes in Hartman's style since his 1970 exhibit in Midland. John says the changes are not conscious ones. "I don't set out to do a painting in a particular style," he says. "'The way I paint has to do with an understanding of space and form. There's a spiritual aspect to it-too."" exhibited, they will be hanging until June 5. John has been painting full time since he left university. "I'm not happy when I'm not working,' he says. He sells some paintings, and says because his physical needs are not ex- travagant, he can live on almost nothing. He will stay in the Midland area until the end of August, and then John Hartman and _ his wife (the former Trish * Powell) will head up-to Ontario's rugged north, near Lake Nipigon. "I want to keep on working," he says, "and pushing toward those things that are important in painting." For an artist who lives most of the time in a peaceful and 'relatively quiet setting, Friday's opening was a little hectic, but John says "I was really pleased. And when I talked to some of the people that night, they said that they. actually recognized something of what I had put into my paintings. And that's what it's all about.'"'
