2 Se SEE SE ES Se Res eee Shut in day is June 6 Many days throughout the year are set aside to pay tribute to those who deserve recognition. One of the lesser known is the first Sunday in June each year, June 6th in 1976, which belongs to the vast army of the handicapped, elderly, in fact all those who are classed as Shut- ins. f Ott rese courageous peoplé*are neglected and forgotten and _ find themselves lonely as life surges unheedingly around and past them. They have long deserved a day of their own when they may be given the attention they merit, not only on this one day but as often as possible. We hope that Shut-in's Day will find our hospitals, nursing homes, Senior Citizens' Homes around .the world, filled with "caring" friends. A drive in the spring air, a personal visit, even a gift, letter or card or a phone call will long be remembered by someone who is confined. St Margaret's Father McTague oa CO ODS CL PDO FOO FLO LOS OS ADS Celebrating 25 years in the priesthood Midland's »Reverend Father E.J. McTague ' celebrates 25 years in the priesthood this year, and his friends in St. Margaret's parish intend to make his silver an- niversary one he won't forget. They have planned a celebration on Sunday, May 30 with a special mass at 2:00. Reverend L.J. Wall of the Chancery Office in Toronto will deliver the homily. After Mass, there will be a joyous reception in the basement of the church and it's hoped that most of Father McTague's classmates from St. Michael's, Class of '51, will be present. Father McTague is the pastor of St. Margaret's and has served in Midland for eight years. Before that he served in four Toronto parishes and in Markham Ontario "Urban life? They can have it!" says Father McTague. 'People care about each other in smaller communities like Midland. This is a won- derful town." In his quarter century in the priesthood, Father McTague has_ seen tremendous changes in the church. He thinks the changes are all for the better. 'Change is in the history of the church,"' he Says. '"'Remember the Reformation? The Vatican Council was the same kind of thing. The church has to be relevant to life as it is today."' These days, according to the Reverend Father, there are no more "nominal Catholics.' He 7 DAYS of SUPER Sat. May 22 to Sat. You are, or you aren't." "Tf a man doesn't believe in God," con- tinues the Reverend Father, "I tell him it's a free country. But do make up your mind. And don't say you do if you don't. And don't say you don't if you do."' In his deep and com- forting voice, he talks about the present state of the church. '"'They say people are falling away trom the church. Well, they always have. The difference today is that young people go to Mass because they want to, not because they are forced to. And they are more likely to do what they see their parents doing, not what their parents tell them to do." Young people always been one of Father McTague's deepest concerns, and since he has come to Midland, he has focussed heavily on the continuing growth and development of St. Theresa's School (He insists that the people of the parish are responsible for the good things that happen at their secondary school Ask the people of St Margaret's, and they'll tell you that Father McTague is the guiding force.) His theory of education is disarmingly simple. "It's not enough to teach a young person how to make a living. A person is more than just a body, so we must teach him why he's alive and how to live. And that's where it's at."' have Although he says St Theresa's is in better shape than ever, he sees more expansion ahead for the school. But he has no doubts about the ability of the people of St Margaret's to rise to the challenge. "They are terrific people," he says "We were gonna paint the church, and do you know 25 guys showed up, and some of them were working on ladders 50 feet up. And they got the job done!"' Father McTague is the only son in a family of six girls of whom only one survives. He says that his decision for the priesthood was probably influenced by one par ticular priest in his boyhood parish. "I guess you might say I was raised on the wrong end of the tracks, and I used to get in the mixup of troubles that were around. But one priest got all the boys in our gang to be altar boys, and then he kind of put the boots to us pretty good too, if you know what I mean. He was a big influence on me. I really admired that man." He says he's a happy man, and he looks content as he sits relaxed in the rectory study in his shirt sleeves, puffing on a pipe that rarely leaves his lips "To grow in love with Christ and with your fellow man,'"' he muses "That's why were here, and that's happiness.' And on May 30, the people of St. Margaret's will return that love, at least twenty five times over DAILY SPECIALS Saturday, May 22nd. & Holiday Monday May 24. m=y-Vcer-V ikem LUIPHOLSTERY ™!s ove 's Haro 10 Bevieve Regular 10.50 to 28.00 per yd.
