County reps to meet Representatives from municipalities in the north end of' Simcoe County will be meeting next Tuesday night to discuss recreational _ needs is. the area. Coordinated by the county's recreation comjmittee, several meeiiigs have already tak place with recreation officers and municipal councils throughout the county. Recreation director Peter Cavill has stated that present facilities are only adequate for the immediate period. Taking into consideration the predictions of the Simcoe Georgian Task Force report, moderate growth in the county would almost im; mediately serve to make the present~-- physical facilities obsolete and inadequate, according to Cavill. Recreational officials have estimated that the Penetanguishene arena serves approximately 8,000 people, while the Midland Arena had serviced a population of 15,600. The Coldwater SE arena accommodates a further 6,000 people. Recreation director Cavill has pointed out that an additional ice surface, in addition to the Midland arena, is needed in the north end of the county. | Other shortcomings in the northern area of the county include provisions for tennis courts, lacrosse courts and track and field faciliti Area municipal of- ficials and employees "will be discussing, the whole recreation aspect in the area", said county committee chair lady Hilda Sibthorpe. "The arena is not the only consideration on the agenda,"' she noted. "Tt's an opportunity for representatives to sit down together and talk about these problems," he said Sd Area labour council may walk out too The Midland and district labour council next month will be discussing the possibility of joining other Canadian labour groups in a one day walkout October 14 to protest the federal governments anti-infl- ation guidelines. President of the local council Mel Moreau said the topic would be on the agenda for the September 16 meeting, but he could not comment on whether Se ed Madeleine Maurice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Maurice of Lafontaine, and Kenneth Marion, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lucien Marion of Penetanguishene, were wed at St. Croix Church, Lafontaine on August. 14th. Photo courtesy of Photo Box or not the council would join the protest. "That's up to the council to decide", he said Monday night. Most union locals in the Midland-Penetanguis- hene area are represented by four delegates to the council. Those delegates represent between 3,500 and 4,000 union members in the district. The idea of the one day walkout, originated by the Canadian Labour Congress, (CLC), is being staged to protest the federal governments anti- inflation program, im- posed one year ago. SELES: Accident puts man in hospital A 'Toronto man' was injured in an automobile accident Friday night when his vehicle, a 1970 convertible went off the road and into the ditch on Peek-a-Boo Trail in Tiny Township. Twenty-three year-old- Greg Colquhoun was taken to Penetanguishene General Hospital and treated for back injuries but was released Sunday after observation. Damage to the car is estimated at $1,200. Colquhoun has been charged with careless driving. There was nothing but problems for the trucker at left last week when a tow truck, summoned to pull him out of the ditch just south of Elmvale, developed i troubles. A remedy was soon found however allowing the abashed driver back to his job. Waterfront plan to go to the people A report on a master plan for development of the Penetanguishene waterfront park was withdrawn from Council's Monday night meeting when it was decided that the' public should have some input into the plan. The report, drawn up by councillor Frances St. Fournier Amant, called for the adoption of a plan prepared by Richard Strong-Steven Moorhead Limited. The plan in- cludes the division of the total park area into five separate areas each having its own different character but all in- terconnected by open spaces, bicycle paths, and a vehicular parkway for cars. The five areas outlined in the plan: include a commercial mooring area, a sports area featuring a swimming pool and skating rink, a beach area for picnics and bathing, an active He said he finds the experience of being directly responsible to council valuable. 'I get plugged into the legislative end of it." The report before council said one of the reasons Fournier was rehired in January was that NIP in Penetanguishene had begun to flounder after he left at the end of last summer. Fournier said the problem had been one of momentum. "One of the challenges of NIP is to be on top of it 100 per cent. To lose the momentum is to lose the effect of the program." The contract is renewable after one year, and Fournier said he would agree to a renewal on two conditions. He would stay if he does not get accepted into a graduate planning program at university, and he would stay if the work is hard enough. He Cont'd from p. 1 said "If the challenge and the work are still here, I wouldn't mind staying. I like the area." Reeve Lionel Dion said "TI think it's only good policy for any council to listen to the people". He suggested that a public hearing on the plan be held to get public input. The rest of council agreed with him and the report was shelved until the meeting is held. No date was set for the hearing. AIB vetoes police raise The Anti-Inflation Board (AIB), has turned down a salary hike of 9.94 per cent agreed upon earlier this year between the town and_ the Penetanguishene Police Department. The decision calls for repayment of any in- crease allowable' and would have given them any i se in a | sum if the AIB had allowed the full increase. He said he has written to the president of the Ontario Police Association, Den- nis Lattin, asking for advice. If Lattin recommends a course of action to fight the AIB decision, the local police association will meet with the police committee of council to discuss the situation. If Lattin says they will have to live with the eight percent in- crease, Lizotte said, they will accept the decision. The police were to have received an increase of $1,300 across the board, effective January 1 of this year HE 'onvict impaired drivers Roland Forget, 18, of Penetanguishene pleaded guilty in provincial court Monday before Judge L.T. Montgomery to a charge of impaired driving. Forget was seen driving a red Volkswagen somewhat erratically down a road in Penetanguishene and was stopped by the police there. Forget claimed he had consumed only four beer and did not realize that such a little amount of alcohol would make him impaired. Forget was fined $100. Impaired driving Clarence Vaillancourt, 18, of Midland was fined $100 in provincial court Monday following a plea of guilty to an impaired driving charge. Vaillancourt has no previous record.
