That effort will take place on Saturday Sept. 4, at 8 p.m. on the playing field at McGuire Park. The two teams will be made up of local area people including the Mayor and Council as well as other town officials. That in itself is probably not a very large attraction but the fact that it is Donkey Baseball should be well worth the price of admission. We again ask for your support to bring this fund raising campaign over the- top. September 2 at 7:30 p.m., Arena Lounge is an important date to remember especially if you have girls playing ringette. This sport is fast becoming too large for the very few people hwo have been running it. We need help! We need an executive to work hard and help raise money to support this sport. Coaches are needed! You all must want your children to play the game because every year the numbers have increased by leaps and bounds. So come on, dont' leave all the work to someone else. Please come out and do your share This past weekend, Saturday Sept. 28, to be exact, was a very proud moment in my life. This was the day that Phil Marchildon (my uncle) was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. His induction of course was for his nine years playing for the Philadelphia A's in the American Baseball League, most of them under the great owner-manager Connie Mack. I never had the priviledge of seeing him pitch but I sure would not miss this induction for all the money in the world. Iam sure that those of you who knew him will feel the same pride and joy that I do. This past summer our swimming staff did an excellent job at Bayfield Park. I say this for the simple reason that a very large number of students who tried Red Cross and Royal Life tests passed. This happened even though the weather was very poor. My vongratulations to the staff - Judy Higginson, Robin Gillesby and Judy Forget for a job well done! Penetanguishene got its 10 runs on eight hits, with two errors and nine men left on base. Uxbridge had seven hits, five errors and left five men on base Ernie Quesnelle started on the mound © for Penetanguishene with James Dagmer taking over on relief. Between them they had two strike- outs and two walks. Eight Penetanguishene batters were struck out Paul McDonald went four for five at bat, and Dave Parent scored three runs The winning rally in the bottom of the sixth inning came about as a result of four straight walks, and then a bases loaded double by Ernie Quesnelle, and a double by Dave Parent. Uxbridge committed four of its five erros in the sixth. Uxbridge opened the scoring with two runs in the third, and Penetanguishene rem- ained scoreless until its seven run sixth inning. Penetanguishene scored one run in each of the remaining innings, while Uxbridge scored its third run in the top of the ninth In Friday night's game, Penetanguishene never really got in the game after Uxbridge scored seven runs in the first two innings. They came back with four runs during the rest of the game, but never caught up. Sunday's game was closer, with the final score 9-8, but again the Uxbridge team was just too much to handle for the Penetanguishene -- men. Anne Merkley comes second in Nationals Penetanguishene's Anne Merkley missed out on her bid to win the Canadian National tennis championships in Toronto last week. She had to settle for second. This was Merkley's first time in the 14 and under division of the championships, and she lost out in the finals to Mary-Lou Smith of Ottawa, who, at age 14, was competing in the division for the last time. Merkley started the tournament, held at the Cobblestones courts in Etobicoke, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Fatima Ravat of Toronto on Monday. On Thursday, she knocked out Beth Willeston of British Columbia by scores of 6-2, 6-2 in the quarter finals. Friday she took on Danielle Lefrancois of Quebec, winning 7-6, 6-2. In the finals, held Saturday, she lost 6-1, 7-6 to Smith. Merkley, playing with Denyse Barbiero of Scarborough, also took second place in the doubles competition. She took home silver medals for effort Speaking of her final match, Merkley said Monday, 'I wasn't thinking in the first set." She said she started thinking in the second set but lost anyway, though by a much" more respectable score. She said "No one thought I was going to make it this far, because it's only my first year". She added she expects to two her In men's wear tournament do better next year. The Canadian National was the last tournament of the summer for Merkley. Jim Baiggs, who at- tended the tournament as a guest of local men's clothier, Wally Meisinger, tied for first place with two other competitors, with a score of 72. Because of a shortage of time, there was no playoff held and the winner was deter- mined on the aggregate scores. Other competitors from this area were Al Four- nier of Midland and Peter Vollett of Elmvale, both of whom were also guests of Meisinger, About 120 people took part in the tournament, some from as far away as Ottawa and Sudbury. A challenge to his Worship Mayor Vince Moreau and the team of raggle-taggle, so-called baseball players who will attempt to defeat a hard riding bunch of Chamber of Commerce Fumblers. . How dare you and the city fathers feel you can defeat the Chamber of Commerce, with all due respect for Councilwomen Mary Rogers and Frances St. Amant, who undoubtedly will be in attendance with this team to hand out their crying towels. An unusual activity will be taking place in the city fathers' backyards. They will be out there with sons and daughters getting instruction and cranking up rusty old arms. On the other hand, the Chamber of Commerce Buckaroos will loosen up their arms the same old way, raising the accustomed glass. This travisty on the sport of baseball will be a victory for the Buackaroos from the Chamber of Commerce under the coaching skill of No Hit Peter Shirriff and Home Run Hans Rick. Again Mr. Moreau, this is one time you can't ask for help from the recreation department planning board or police department. You are stuck with that team of misfits. Remember Vince, the date is Saturday night, September 4, 1976 at McGuire Park. We are reminding you to be there so you can personally accept your defeat for that so-called team of yours. The losers will contribute $2.00 per man to the fund for lights at the park. Iam sure you have chosen a good name for you team, however, for now let's just call you a bunch of Donkey Baseball Players. Reply from Mayor Vince Moreau It has been brought to my attention that the Penetanguishene Chamber of Commerce has thrown out a challenge to myse]f and the members of Town Council to participate in a game of Donkey Baseball. Let me assure you that this is all they are going to throw out as they will never catch Moreau's Muggers As for Councillors Rogers and St. Amant carrying crying towels, these will only be used to wipe the tears of the opposition as they pay their two dollars to the light fund. As a matter of fact I think they should also pay the price of admission for the privilege of playing against such a 'high calibre of ball team as the speedy, ever alert councillors. I see they will be practising in their usual manner by bending their elbows. Well I say to them that they will also get lots of practice after the game drowning their sorrows. Come on out folks on Saturday, September 4 at 8:00 p.m., and see the greatest show on earth. away at the tournament. calendar WMELEC Ye CM Az WeSY Taiking | sports by Tom Shields At this time of the year and especially this year, there are lots of sports on the go from local right up to the International scene. Before I get into it, last week's column was on the Argos. To add a bit of continuity, last week they stunk out the Autostade in Montreal, and tonight they get another shot, this time in the nation's capital, but if they stink the joint out, it won't be the first time an "egg"' has been laid in Ottawa. So much for football. Penetanguishene athletes figured prominently in the athletic world this week on the local, national, and the international level, and it was a mixture of good and bad news. Locally, the Penetang Juvenile softball team roared into the OASA All-Ontario quarter final series with a win over Uxbridge.in Penetang, but Uxbridge was not be denied and they stormed back to win the next two games in the, best of three series, beating the Penetang boys 9-8 in the ~| third game on Sunday afternoon at McGuire Park. " On the national level, the 13-year old tennis Junior tennis finals in Toronto for girls 14 and under, but the temperature reaching 100 degrees at court level, Anne lost out to Mary Lou Smith, the top seed from Ottawa in two straight sets, 6-1 and 7-6. Anne was definitely off her game in the first set and came on strong in the second set, only to lose by a point. Had she won that second game Anne would have had a good chance at winning the third game as she and the heat were wearing down Miss Smith, who never-the-less clung on for the victory. Anne will still have another year in the 14-and under department. I don't classify this really as bad news, may be for Anne it is "'sad"" news, but then again to get to the Canadian finals means that she must be a great tennis player and as it stands right now, in our nation, from coast to coast, there is only one girl ranking above the Penetanguishene heroine, and that is Mary Lou Smith, the victor on Saturday. The next good news is sort of a national story of wonder, Anne Merkley made it to the Canadian ~ Saturday, Phil "Babe"' Marchildon was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame at the CNE in the same building as the Hockey Hall of Fame. At 29 years of age, Phil signed a contract in the early 40s to pitch for the Philadelphia Athletics in baseball's American League. Phil left a bush league in Northern Ontario and signed for fifteen grand, a good sum in those days and the "'Babe" proceeded to win 17 ball games. Today he would almost be a shoo-in to win the Rookie of the Year award. At least he would be battling with the like of Mark Fydrich of the Tigers for top rookie honours. But at this time, people in North America were more interested in the number of strikes at the heart of Germany or Japan than on the baseball field and Phil didn't get the write-ups he would et today. Phil joined the Royal Canadian Air orce, but was shot down over Germany. Following the war he returned to the City of Brotherly Love and drew over 35,000 fans in his first appearance back in an athletic uniform and the following year he posted 19 wins (second highest for a Canadian as only Fergie Jenkins of Chatham has won more in one season). Bad nerves from his war effort forced him out of baseball in the rlext few seasons. Phil is now living in Toronto where it was his day at the CNE as he joined the top athletes in our country in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Phil was in Toronto, but his mind was back in Philadelphia playing baseball and back in Penetanguishene where he grew up., No Doubt about Golf King Russ Howard a youngster from Yonge Street in Midland is the area's top golfer and who can argue his credentials. A few weeks back Russ won the Men's Championship at the Midland Golf Club, and he duplicated those efforts on the weekend to capture' the Men's champ- ionship at Brooklea after 36 'holes on the weekend. Russ fired a 73 and 77 for an even'150 and a six stroke victory over runner- up Walter Blythe, but after 30 holes Russ only had a one stroke advantage over Walter who eventually faltered a bit on the final six holes. Oddly enough, four days before the club championship was to be played Russ told me that he thought 150 would win it. Prediction Time Without any further ado, here is how I pick the Canada Cup to finish out 1. Canada 2. Czechoslovakia 3. Sweden 4. Russia, 5. United States 6. Finland.
