SOUND 777 Third Ave. 371-0134 1045 Mississaga Street West 325-7411 _ doing this place it in the snow with the black end Fin, Fur, and Feather by Bryan Berriault Duck season opens on Sept. 25th and closes on Dec. 15th one half hour after sunset. The shooting hours are from one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset. Common sense should govern your shooting. Late shooters very seldom retrieve their ean. Usually darkness covers the marsh hefore, ducks or geese are found and thus a bird is | go to waste. The good sportsman always sure he can retrieve what he shoots. Dogs are by far the best friend at this time of year. There is nothing more satisfying to a hunter than wat- ching a dog he has trained retrieving a duck he has shot. To those of us who have dogs it is time to start a keen program of training to give the dog that fine polished finish. It-really isn't hard to tell duck season is just around the corner because Trever (a black lab) has been nervously pacing in his kennel waiting to get at his job. Pheasants also open on Sept. 25th in our area. Since the Tiny Marsh offer our only area for these fine birds there is usually a large crowd on the weekend but is is huntable on weekdays for those who are lucky enough to be able to get out. If you have never hunted pheasant get hold of someone with a good dog and go after them. You'll be in for a real good day. Grouse also opens on the same day. these birds get up fast and fly hard making them anything but easy to hit but fun to try and usually more exercise and sweat come out of the bush then birds. For those who hunt deer in Matchedash they will be having a five day season this year star- ting on Monday, November Ist to the 6th along with the Muskoka area. Moose will also be open in this area for the same time limit. The Parry Sound area will be open for deer from November 1st to the 13th and moose from the ist to the 6th. Farther north the moose season varies in opening from the end of Sept. to the middle of October. Don't give up on the bass yet. There are still some of the best days left. Muskies have been hitting good at Methodist Island in Victoria Harbour. Swim Wizz have been proving their value by producing best. Pike should start hit- ting better_as the water cools. Large silver Rapalas would be my best bet at this time of year. Rainbows should be moving off shore at Collingwood, Owen Sound and Meaford soon so keep it in mind. One day a young hunter came running into me all excited about a new way he had heard of hunting rabbits. An old gentleman whom we will call Smokey told him during the winter to get a freshly cut log and paint the end flat black. Upon just out of the snow and to let the hounds loose. The young fellow assured me the rabbits would try to get away from the hounds by running down what they thought was a rabbit hole and stun themselves when hitting the black end of the log ending up ina stew. Ross Willett is eager to try it this winter. Don't forget the Hunters and Anglers Auction Sale Sept. 18 at 12 noon.
