The summer was_ over and the whole family was involved in making preparations for the long winter ahead: This fall, area children , will be given an _ op- portunity to relive this harvest time at the Naval and Military Establish- ments ion Penetanguishene. The fall staff at the site will be conducting a series of half-day programs designed to recreate the autumn activities of a family living military outpost in 1845. Comparisons will be made between con- temporary and nineteenth century life styles so that children can experience .and_ un- derstand the hardships and isolation faced by the early settlers in this.area. The work day began at sunrise and every member of the family took part. Midland Fall Fair set to go The Midland and District Fall Fair is set to go this weekend. Despite numerous setbacks, including the fire that destroyed the Midland Arena Gardens during the summer, the Fall Fair will open to the public on Friday. Apart from the fact that there will be no com- mercial displays at the fair this year, the fair will offer entertainment and education for young and old as it has in previous years. The judging of fruit, vegetables,» grain, flowers, handiwork, domestic science displays and junior fair displays will take place on Friday morning, before the fair officially opens at noon. A street parade, complete with bands, floats and funny dress will kick off the two day affair at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. The school parade will leave the Midland municipal of- fices on Dominion Avenue shortly before 1:00 p.m. and will proceed south on King Street to the fair-- grounds beside the Midland Curling» Club building. ee The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. : The North Central 4-f Club is displaying its accomplishments at the fair and judging will take place at 2:30 p.m. The judging of ponies and heavy horses takes place at 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. respectively. The ever popular horse- pulling contest is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Friday night. The Midland town band will provide light musical entertainment on Friday night And of course the midway operated by Happy Land shows will be in operation throughout the fair days.
